Summary

  • Iron Banner in Destiny 2 offers exclusive loot but faces criticism for its limited availability.
  • The Chill Clip perk on Tinasha's Mastery is powerful in PvE scenarios and sought after by players.
  • Bungie should allow players to access rank-up rewards at all times to address missed opportunities.

There are many pros to farming Iron Banner in Destiny 2 for loot, though the activity is arguably very FOMO-centric, as it's available only for a few weeks in every Episode, thus "forcing" Guardians to play some matches not to miss out on its exclusive rewards. This is true for various systems in Destiny 2, though Iron Banner can make this all the more apparent given that it's a PvP mode with a mixed reputation. In the case of Revenant, Iron Banner introduced a highly popular and sought-after weapon, which combines a great archetype and some amazing rolls, only to make it very hard to get. Things got worse recently, sparking a debate about what Bungie can do to improve the experience.

It's not uncommon for Destiny 2's Iron Banner or other game modes to add chase weapons at some point, such as the Cataphract grenade launcher for Trials of Osiris or the recent Tinasha's Master rocket sidearm for IB. Tinasha's Mastery in particular is still being chased by a lot of players thanks to the popularity of rocket sidearms as a whole and the fact that this particular gun can roll High-Explosive Ordnance, Air Trigger, and Chill Clip to become a powerhouse in PvE. Now that Iron Banners came back, Bungie added a good Chill Clip roll as a freebie for ranking up Lord Saladin's reputation track, leaving behind a big chunk of the game's population.

Destiny 2 is Finally Buffing Its Weakest Subclasses in Episode Heresy

Destiny 2's Episode Heresy is already looking promising, as Bungie's latest TWID describes nice buffs for the game's weakest subclasses.

Why Destiny 2's Tinasha's Mastery Sparked a Debate About Iron Banner

Destiny 2's Chill Clip perk is especially powerful in PvE because it can chill any enemy on the first hit and freeze on the second or third depending on the weapon type, making it incredibly strong in a plethora of situations. These include:

  • Empowering Stasis builds or Prismatic builds using Stasis, as Chill Clip uses two Stasis verbs
  • Stunning Overload and Unstoppable Champions in Destiny 2 with ease regardless of a season's selection of anti-Champion perks for the Artifact
  • Control the battlefield even on non-synergistic builds thanks to the ability to chill and freeze with ease

All this is great on rocket sidearms since they are a powerful archetype with good ammo economy, and on top of that, the Kinetic slot in a player's inventory may not have a better weapon to use unless one is using specific rolls or Exotics for different cases. As such, Tinasha's Mastery is one of Destiny 2's best weapons at the moment, but it's hard to get a decent roll. With last week's Iron Banner, Bungie added Tinasha's Master to the reward track at rank 4, essentially giving players a free Chill Clip roll. The problem is that new rewards cannot be retroactively claimed if they were taken once, so anyone who had already gotten a rank 4 reward from a previous iteration of Iron Banner couldn't get this roll.

Destiny 2 Should Allow Players to Get Rank-Up Rewards At All Times

Considering that Iron Banner's guaranteed free Chill Clip roll for Tinasha's Mastery was far from a god roll, it's likely that players might have gotten a better one simply by turning in Engrams. Still, the problem is that rewards from vendors change over time, and one can't go back to get past ones or new ones. As such, Bungie should at least allow players to purchase these rolls from their respective vendors or from Banshee-44 at the Tower when they do change, much like several Destiny 2 god rolls were given away for free after the perk weighting controversy.

This wouldn't be too big of an ask, considering that sometimes vendor rank-up rewards change even within the same week, as is the case with Iron Banner, so giving players a chance to get them regardless would be a good move. If there needs to be a requirement, then it could be that players need to have reached that specific rank at least once in that season or Episode. Destiny 2's Episode 3 is already making some good changes, but it remains to be seen if they will include something for vendor rank-up rewards - particularly for Iron Banner.
