Summary

  • Destiny 2's Into The Light could bring back Midnight Coup hand cannon from Year 1 to satisfy fans longing for old content.
  • The key art teases three Guardians fighting against The Witness' forces, possibly hinting at the return of old planets and activities in the upcoming update.
  • While speculation surrounds Midnight Coup's return, doubts exist due to changes in the key art and Bungie's past with cut content.

Destiny 2 might be bringing back a beloved hand cannon from Year 1 with the release of Into The Light in April, as fans notice in the new key art shared online. Destiny 2's delay of The Final Shape has many veterans worried because of the drought of content that has been hitting the game for a while, combined with a general sense of distrust that the community has had toward Bungie since the layoffs. Into The Light will have new content, though, and the addition of long-gone Year 1 weapons could help.

It's not clear exactly what Into The Light will entail just yet, but there have been several leaks floating around about how it will bring back old planets and possibly even activities that are currently Vaulted, and thus inaccessible. Still, the new Destiny 2 key art that is causing fans to speculate was released today with a new announcement from Bungie stating that there will be three separate livestreams covering developer commentary about Into The Light's content.

April 9 Is Going to Be a Huge Day for Destiny 2 Fans

Bungie confirms the upcoming Destiny 2 Into the Light update, providing new details, a dedicated livestream event, as well as sharing its launch date.

April 2024 Will Be a Big Month For Destiny 2

As announced by Bungie in today's TWID post, Into The Light will be released on April 9, and it will presumably be a rather big content update if three livestreams are needed to cover its changes. The key art shared for Into The Light depicts three Guardians fighting against the forces of The Witness, and the Hunter in the middle of the image is using a hand cannon that is eerily similar to Midnight Coup from the Year 1 Leviathan Raid that was Vaulted with Beyond Light.

The Raid has since been inaccessible, and the same holds for its loot. Midnight Coup was one of the most beloved Year 1 weapons for a series of reasons, including its aesthetic, its feel and gunplay, and its combination of perks. However, after the Leviathan Raid was Vaulted, it became unobtainable for all players and new weapons started to come out, eventually phasing Midnight Coup out entirely.

Why Destiny 2's Midnight Coup Might be Coming Back in Into The Light

The key art for Into The Light does seem to allude to the possibility of Midnight Coup coming back, as it was the first and only hand cannon with that design, so having another gun with it after the original was so loved by players may not be the best move on Bungie's part. Also, multiple alleged leaks pointed to old content coming back with Into The Light, and Midnight Coup fits the bill.

Why Destiny 2 Might Not Bring Midnight Coup Back

However, there are several reasons why Midnight Coup is unlikely to come back. For starters, as much as players may love to go back to playing the Leviathan Raid, Calus has been dead since the events of Lightfall last year. On top of that, the gun resembling Midnight Coup in the key art seems to have the same model, but it has a shield or crest depicted on its side rather than the original Leviathan motif. Finally, not all key art weapons make it into the game, and Destiny 2's cut Lightfall guns are a testament to that. Still, given the premise, fans are holding out hope that it is indeed a reprised version of Midnight Coup - possibly even better than before.
