The Warlord's Ruin dungeon in Destiny 2 easily stands out as one of the most interesting of the bunch in terms of overall flow, map layout, and encounter design. The related In The Shadow Of The Mountain quest gives players every opportunity to get used to the dungeon's feel, and if you want to finish this quest, you're definitely going to need to run Warlord's Ruin multiple times.

In The Shadow Of The Mountain is a little tedious, especially if you expect it to end after the first run like in Ares Desperado from Destiny 2's Spire of the Watcher dungeon. If you're wondering how long it'll take before you actually finish this quest, here's a list of all the steps for In The Shadow Of The Mountain for your convenience.

This quest will have you running through Warlord's Ruin multiple times in search of a bunch of items that can only be obtained within the dungeon itself. The steps are pretty simple, but it's going to be very grindy.

  1. Complete the Warlord's Ruin Dungeon in the EDZ
  2. Collect a Corrupted Ahamkara Bone
  3. Collect five Dark Ether Tinctures
  4. Find and restore three lost Bones of Hefnd
  5. Find and restore three more Bones of Hefnd
  6. Find and restore the final three Bones of Hefnd
  7. Gather Blighted Wishing Glass and Dark Ether Tinctures
  8. Return to Hefnd's Cairn
  9. Return to Ikora

Collecting Blighted Wishing Glass and Dark Ether Tinctures in this Destiny 2 dungeon is rather simple — defeat bosses for the former, and kill Thieving Wretches (glowing Screebs) for the latter.

Bones of Hefnd

Destiny 2 Warlord's Ruin Buried Bloodline Exotic Void Sidearm

The real issue is collecting the Bones of Hefnd. You get your first one after beating Warlord's Ruin the first time. As for the rest, you need to dispel Taken Corruption on locked doors scattered throughout the dungeon. The doors themselves are level-gated; you can only unlock level 2 and 3 doors after you complete steps 4 and 5. However, you can bypass this by having someone else who has already finished the quest open the doors for you.

For players who don't want to completely miss out on exploring the dungeon, here are the general Bone of Hefnd locations in Destiny 2:

  • First Bone (Level 1) - Inside the first fort
  • Second Bone (Level 1) - In the maze after the prison cell puzzle
  • Third Bone (Level 1) - In a tunnel by the cliffside after fighting the second boss
  • Fourth Bone (Level 2) - In the maze after the prison cell puzzle; look for a hole in a wall
  • Fifth Bone (Level 2) - After the maze, reach the next fort. Jump to the cliffside on your right and follow the path to an open tunnel.
  • Sixth Bone (Level 2) - After the second boss. From the room full of trapped chests, crouch through the opening on the wall in the next room, then climb up.
  • Seventh Bone (Level 3) - In the maze after the prison cell puzzle. Head to the area with the chest sitting behind iron bars. From there, turn left, then jump to the upper floor. Explore the tunnels there.
  • Eighth Bone (Level 3) - In the area with the large Taken Blight. Jump down the floating debris and look for an indent in the cave wall.
  • Ninth Bone (Level 3) - Right after the area with the large Taken Blight. Check all the tunnel entrances as you ascend the mountain.

Keep in mind that finishing In The Shadow Of The Mountain will not reward you with the dungeon exotic. You'll get a random exotic for your class on top of all the loot in the drop table for Warlord's Ruin, assuming you ran the dungeon multiple times.
