After plenty of teases over the past month, Bungie finally revealed the upcoming future of Destiny 2, previously known as Codename Frontiers. July 15 will bring the first post-Light and Darkness Saga expansion to the game known as The Edge of Fate. While there's still plenty of mystery left to uncover, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate focuses on The Nine, a group which has been teased but is still largely unknown. Bungie is also planning major core changes to Destiny 2, one of which launches later today on May 9.

Destiny 2 Releases Major Sandbox Update for May 2025

Bungie releases a major sandbox update for Destiny 2, adding new content like the Rite of the Nine, while also tweaking parts of the game.

Starting on May 9 at the game's daily reset, Bungie is launching a special Crucible event called Heavy Metal. While the PvP side of Destiny has experimented with vehicles in the past, this limited-time game mode puts them front and center. Players will be able to use Brigs and Drake tanks in these matches to spice things up and, better yet, new rewards are up for grabs, including the Gryphon Combat Sparrow, which finally gives players offensive weapons to use while riding around. Alongside a special Reward Track, players can also earn the Heavy Metal title and Mad Dog emblem.

Heavy Metal Launches Destiny 2's Event Home

Previously, these limited-time events would come with Bungie's Event Card system, showing the challenges and reward track from a menu. However, Bungie is introducing a completely new feature called Event Home into Destiny 2 with Heavy Metal. Bungie calls it a one-stop shop for all things events, where players can see their daily and weekly challenges, the event overview, Event Rank track, and a new token system. The plan is to utilize this feature for all seasonal events, like Solstice, Dawning, and the others.

In addition to the Event Home and Edge of Fate news, Bungie went a step further and revealed the full year's worth of content coming during the Year of Prophecy. While there are certainly plenty of missing details, the Destiny 2 roadmap of content highlights both expansions as well as the major updates within each, including Ash & Iron and Shadow & Order. Either way, it looks as if Bungie has plenty left in the tank for Destiny 2 players.
