A Destiny 2 fan has given an entirely new galaxy a reason to fear The Witness, by creating its most loyal servants, the Dread, within the life-simulation game Spore. The fan created the Destiny 2 foes using Spore's built-in creature creator function, expertly mimicking their forms within Spore's whimsical aesthetic.
First released for PC in 2008, Spore seemed to represent the next step in evolution for Maxis, the legendary game studio. The developer made its name on detailed simulation-based games like SimCity and The Sims, which aimed to replicate specific aspects of life, like urban planning and human living. Spore challenged players to shepherd a species of cartoonish lifeform from its birth in a primordial soup through different stages of evolution, from microscopic organism to spacefaring civilization. Though the game ultimately left a mixed legacy, many fans still remember it fondly for its grand scale and the versatility of its creature creator at enabling player expression.
Destiny 2 Players Are Frustrated With Spoilers and How the Game Tells Its Story
Destiny 2 players catching up to the Final Shape expansion are upset with how the game spoils its story to the community during Episode: Echoes.
For Destiny 2 fan Moisted-Akka, that expression was in the wholesale importation of the entire Destiny 2 Dread faction into Spore's galaxy using the in-game creature creator. Using the creature creator's ability to mix and deform a variety of parts and shapes in varying combinations, Moisted-Akka was able to replicate the look of multiple Dread units, including a few unique ones like raid bosses.
Destiny 2 Dread Faction Enters Spore Thanks to A Fan's Effort
In their post on the Destiny 2 subreddit, Moisted-Akka showed off their recreations of standard Dread from The Final Shape like the Dread Attendant, the flying Dread Grim, the fearsome Tormenter, the Dread Husk, the Stasis-casting Dread Omen, and the Strand-using Dread Weaver and Harbinger. Moisted-Akka even replicated unique Dread units like Rhulk, boss of The Witch Queen's Vow of the Disciple raid, Nezarec, boss of the Lightfall Root of Nightmares raid, and the boss of bosses itself, The Witness. Moisted-Akka's version of The Witness even incorporated the villain's multiple forms, from their "resting" pose with hands clasped to the multi-armed menace seen in the Salvation's Edge final encounter.
Fans praised Moisted-Akka's work, particularly hailing their choice of Spore as the preferred medium. Some fans were moved by nostalgic feelings at seeing the game again more than fifteen years after it first launched. Some players noted that Spore's focus on eventually evolving a player's society into a spacefaring civilization had a certain poetic resonance with the story of the Dread, which was itself one of many civilizations twisted and changed by The Witness in its aim to bring the universe to its "final shape." Now The Witness, its disciples, and its armies are ready to terrorize an entirely new galaxy.
