Summary

  • The Coil activity in Destiny 2's Season of the Wish is widely praised for its challenging gameplay and unique currency system.
  • Despite the tradition of rotating out seasonal activities, it would benefit the game if Bungie kept The Coil even after the Final Shape expansion.
  • The Coil's popularity suggests that retaining it and updating it with new mechanics or even with a new name would be a welcome approach for Destiny 2.

Destiny 2's Coil activity is widely considered one of the best seasonal activities the game has ever seen. Introduced in November 2023 at the start of Season of the Wish, The Coil tasks players with navigating several pathways in Riven's Lair, each filled with surprising death traps to avoid, platforming puzzles to traverse, various debuffs to manage, and increasingly challenging enemies and bosses to defeat. Along the way, players collect a currency called Wishing Glass that they can then spend on temporary upgrades at the end of each pathway, thus improving their chances in the next. It is without a doubt one of the most varied and challenging seasonal activities the game has ever had, and players aren't ready to see it go.

Unfortunately, as is tradition, Destiny 2's seasonal activities are rotated out of the game when a new expansion arrives. However, Season of the Wish has been confirmed to be Destiny 2's last season before its highly anticipated Final Shape expansion launches in June, so Bungie could afford to do something different this time. While it would make sense to remove The Coil once The Final Shape launches, it would arguably make more sense to keep a version of the activity in the game given its massive popularity.

Every ‘Destiny Killer’ that Destiny 2 Has Outlived So Far

Despite several live-service and looter-shooter games being anticipated to ‘kill’ Destiny 2, none have been able to finish the job so far.

How Destiny 2 Could Keep The Coil Activity Beyond The Final Shape

As Destiny 2's story evolves with The Final Shape and beyond, the lore surrounding The Coil activity likely won't fit the game's overarching narrative. However, perhaps the activity could evolve along with the story, especially with Destiny 2's new episodic format that will launch alongside The Final Shape. There seems to be near limitless potential when it comes to Destiny 2's episodes, but that may only be a notion inspired by the very small amount of information currently disclosed about the new format. Still, Bungie could certainly take advantage of this restructuring by opening up Destiny 2 in a way it has not been in a long time — specifically, by allowing both past and present story arcs to simultaneously coexist in the game.

It may be a tall order, but retaining The Coil would undoubtedly be a feature welcomed by the Destiny 2 community at large.

If Bungie wishes to avoid the complexity that would inevitably come with mixing old stories with the new, Destiny 2 could still retain the format of its Coil activity and simply evolve it with the story. After all, it is largely the structure and gameplay mechanics of The Coil that players enjoy, not the story it is founded upon. As such, The Coil could afford to abandon its narrative roots altogether and simply be the same activity it has always been, but with a different story twist as Destiny 2's episodes are introduced. This would likely see The Coil regularly updated with new enemies and bosses, and new rewards to fit the theme and loot pool of each episode. It may be a tall order, but retaining The Coil would undoubtedly be a feature welcomed by the Destiny 2 community at large.

Lore issues aside, The Coil activity could just remain as it is in Destiny 2 for the long run, with little or no changes regularly made to it. However, it would likely eventually grow stale, and updates would be requested anyway. Either way, its unprecedented popularity makes it deserving of an ongoing role in Destiny 2's legacy, even if that means it is no longer called "The Coil" and is instead reintroduced with the same DNA and a different name. At the very least, the hope is that Bungie has taken note of The Coil's acclaim and plans to design and implement more activities like it in the future.
