Region chests have been a part of Destiny 2 since it first launched in 2017. They were similar to the gold chests encountered in Destiny 1, but provided substantially more rewards. While Destiny 2 launched with a large amount of region chests to obtain, the expansions added significantly fewer. In previous releases, region chests were a great way to improve your Power when you were not at the soft cap yet.
While region chests in the Pale Heart can't be obtained until after beating the campaign, it is still a good idea to go after them for the rewards they provide. To be more specific, region chests drop Glimmer, armor, reputation with Ghost, and Lost Encryption Bits. There are nine region chests in total, and here are where they can be found.

Region Chests in The Landing
First Chest
The first region chest can be found near the bottom of a hole in a cave that is roughly in the middle of the Landing. Jump down to the ledge to reach the chest.
Second Chest
The second region chest is behind a waterfall that is below a bridge on the eastern edge of the Landing.
Third Chest
On the southwestern wall of the Landing, there is a building partially embedded. Jump up onto a small wooden ledge, look right and then jump up and around to reach another ledge. Next, jump up and toward the right to go through the broken window of the building. Go straight into the room ahead to find the third and final chest.
Region Chests in The Blooming
First Chest
Upon arriving via the landing zone, drop and enter the nearby cave with the large purple crystal in the ceiling. Follow this path and jump up the rocks to find the first chest.
Second Chest
West of the landing zone, you will find a large tree. Carefully jump to the top of the tree to spot the second chest.
Third Chest
The third chest is on the northwest edge of the Blooming. Jump up to the top of the cliff to find the chest.
Region Chests in The Impasse
First Chest
The first chest is southwest of the landing zone. Look for a cliff side with flat, square edges and look down to spot the region chest.
Second Chest
The second chest is on top of the temple near the landing zone.
Third Chest
The third and final chest is in a cave along a rock wall just before the path that takes you to the lost sector.
