The Strange Parallels Between Tanjiro and Yoriichi

Yoriichi and Tanjiro Are Quite Alike Despite Being Born Centuries Apart

Anime-only fans might not be much familiar with Yoriichi Tsugikuni. He was a swordsman from the Sengoku era who is widely regarded as the strongest demon slayer to have ever lived. Unlike most members of the Demon Slayer Corps, Yoriichi was naturally gifted and skilled enough to defeat adult swordsmen soon after he picked up the sword for the first time.

Interestingly, Yoriichi was a lot like Tanjiro even though the two never met in person. Like Kamado, Tsugikuni was incredibly kind and despite being revered by the swordsmen of his era, he never looked down on anyone. He also believed in uplifting those around him and never flinched in putting his life on the line to protect the weak. Yoriichi was also the inventor of Sun Breathing which went on to become the inspiration for other swordsmanship styles.

Over the centuries, the knowledge of Sun Breathing became so obscure that even the Hashira didn't know about it. While there were written records, no demon slayers managed to use it until Tanjiro Kamado inspired by the traditional family dance to the Fire God utilized it against Rui on Mount Natagumo, becoming the only other user of the breathing style.

It should not come as a surprise that whenever Tanjiro used Hinokami Kagura it would trigger Muzan's memories of his battle with Yoriichi. Even the hanafuda earrings worn by Kamado are the same as the ones used by Tsugikuni. It bothered the Demon King so much that he sent demons especially to assassinate Tanjiro, even when he was nowhere near as powerful as a Hashira.

In the Infinity Castle arc, Muzan's most trustworthy henchmen will fight the Demon Slayer Corps in a battle of extermination. While it should be obvious that Tanjiro won't be fighting Yoriichi in a one-on-one battle, several moments in the trilogy will be good enough to give fans an idea of who is stronger between the two.

Tanjiro Kamado, who has been burning with a desire for revenge ever since Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku was murdered in front of him, will finally get the opportunity to confront Upper Rank Three Akaza for his crimes. The battle between them will be intense and filled with moments that will transform Tanjiro into a far more skilled swordsman. He will be using the Sun Breathing with more control and precision. Each of his movements will become more intentional, almost mimicking the way Yoriichi used to fight.

Meanwhile, memories of Yoriichi's past will offer more clarity on the kind of person he used to be. It will also shed light on how he grew up to become the greatest swordsman of all time. But perhaps the highlight of it all will be the glimpses of his fights.

In order to soothe the spirits of those it killed, and to make sure it claims no further victims, I will swing my blade down and lop off the head of any demon without mercy! But I will not belittle those who regret their actions and suffer over the things they did as demons. Because demons were once human. Because they were like me. ~ Tanjiro

As mentioned earlier, Muzan already sees Tanjiro as Yoriichi's shadow but only once the upcoming arc is adapted in the trilogy will the fans also have a better grasp of why that is. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie will give fans a closer understanding of how good a demon slayer Tanjiro has become. It will also allow them to decide who is stronger between Yoriichi and Kamado, or if it is even meaningful to compare the two.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy's first installment is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 12, 2025.
