Demon Slayer has introduced us to several breathing techniques, including Mist Breathing, Water Breathing, Flame Breathing, and many more. All of these breathing techniques are incredibly powerful, enabling their users to surpass their physical limits. There's one breathing technique that reigns supreme, though; yes, we are talking about Sun Breathing.
Whether it's the fiery breathing style of Rengoku or the flamboyant Sound Breathing of Tengen, the demon slayers wouldn't have known these techniques if not for Sun Breathing. Every technique we've seen in the Demon Slayer anime so far has been derived from Sun Breathing. However, there's still one breathing technique that we have yet to witness in the anime series — Moon Breathing. This breathing technique has been a mystery so far in the series, but fortunately, we will see its destructive power in the Infinity Castle story arc.
Demon Slayer: The Most Versatile Breathing Style, Explained
Demon Slayer is home to many breathing styles, but one stands above the rest as the most-versatile and strongest techniques to ever exist.
The Moon Breathing Will Finally Get The Spotlight In Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle
This Breathing Technique Is Only Second To Sun Breathing
Every Breathing Technique we have seen in the series so far is simply a weaker version of Sun Breathing, and it's the same with Moon Breathing. The Moon Breathing style was also derived from Sun Breathing, but comparatively, this style is much more deadly than other breathing techniques. In fact, it's the strongest breathing technique after Sun Breathing.
Sun Breathing was invented by Yoriichi, the strongest swordsman to ever live, and the only man whom Muzan feared the most. This was a crucial moment for the Demon Slayer Corps. Before the invention of breathing styles, the Demon Slayers fought demons simply with swords, but Sun Breathing actually gave them a fighting chance.
Yoriichi's rise to become the strongest swordsman didn't sit well with his elder brother, Kokushibo, who at the time was known as Michikatsu Tsugikuni. Michikatsu grew jealous of Yoriichi, as it was his dream to become the most skilled swordsman to ever live. So, the man decided to learn Sun Breathing from Yoriichi, but he couldn't hold on to this technique for long. Instead, he pivoted Sun Breathing to give birth to its counterpart — Moon Breathing. A breathing technique in Demon Slayer can have multiple users, as we've seen with Water Breathing; however, Moon Breathing is completely unique to Kokushibo. In fact, Moon Breathing and its power are a mystery to everyone, and that's what makes this more deadly.

In the Infinity Castle arc, the demon slayers gather against the Upper Rank One, but they are completely unprepared to go against Moon Breathing. On top of that, Kokushibo perfected the Total Concentration Breathing, which makes his Moon Breathing even more threatening and destructive. Also, let's not forget that Kokushibo lived for more than four centuries, so he had enough time to perfect his breathing technique. While this "perfection" didn't allow him to surpass Yoriichi's Sun Breathing, it did help him become the strongest demon after Muzan.
Up until this point in the story, we haven't seen the power of Moon Breathing. However, things will change in the Infinity Castle arc, which will feature Kokushibo going against the strongest of Hashiras. We will witness the power of the Moon Breathing and its sixteen forms in all their glory. The Hashiras don't expect a demon to use Breathing styles, so that would be a surprise in itself. However, the fact that Kokushibo will use a breathing style that was lost in time will only make things worse for the demon slayers.
Kokushibo's Moon Breathing Becomes More Destructive After He Becomes A Demon
The Upper Rank One Combines Moon Breathing With The Blood Demon Art
We have seen the high-tier demons exercise the Blood Demon Art in Demon Slayer. It's a deadly power that gives the Upper Moons an edge over the warriors of humanity. Of course, the Hashiras have breathing styles to counter this demonic power, but still, Blood Demon Art has been a problem for Demon Slayers since the very beginning. Now, imagine a demon combining the Blood Demon Art with a powerful breathing style; well, that's the fighting style Kokushibo has adapted after turning into a demon.
Demon Slayer: Tanjiro’s Ultimate Form, Explained
In Demon Slayer, Tanjiro is known for having many powerful Breathing Techniques and abilities. But what exactly is his "Ultimate Form?"
Over the years, Kokushibo perfected this unique fighting style, which allowed him to create a total of sixteen forms of Moon Breathing. Some of the most powerful forms of Moon Breathing (in combination with Blood Demon Art) include Dark Moon, Evening Palace, Perpetual Night, Lonely Moon, and Moonbow, Half Moon. Moon Breathing in itself is only second to Sun Breathing, so we can only imagine the power of its user if they combine it with the Blood Demon Art. Every form that Kokushibo will use in Infinity Castle will be in conjunction with Blood Demon Art. And of course, witnessing Kokushibo exercising this incredible power will be an experience like no other, but it's also unfortunate that we won't get to see the raw demonstration of Moon Breathing.
The first Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie is scheduled to release in the United States on September 12.
