Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba revolves around the seemingly endless conflict between the forces of good and evil. In their battle for the greater good, demon slayers have to train relentlessly to become skilled combatants capable of taking on some of the most powerful demons in existence.

But in spite of putting in all the hard work, they are still not strong enough to stand on equal ground with the Upper Moons. Luckily, under specific circumstances, demon slayers can manifest a mark that significantly enhances their fighting capabilities and makes them far more efficient. While it does seem like a blessing, the Demon Slayer Mark comes at a huge cost that almost all bearers eventually have to pay.

What is the Demon Slayer Mark, and Why Does it Matter so Much?

The Mark Grants Demon Slayer Superhuman Capabilities

  • Manga Debut: Chapter 127
  • Anime Debut: Episode 56

Demon Slayer Mark is a mysterious birthmark-like irregularity on the skin of a demon slayer. It manifests in life-threatening conditions when a combatant is in close proximity with the bearer of the mark and their body temperature exceeds 39° Celsius while simultaneously maintaining a heart rate of well over 200 beats per minute for a sustained period.

When the marked one arrives, the mark will appear on others around that person as if in resonance.

Once a demon slayer has awakened the mark, they are gifted with superhuman physical abilities along with access to the Transparent World and Bright Red Nichirin Sword. These abilities together make members of the Demon Slayer Corps capable of confronting Upper Moons and fighting them on equal ground, albeit briefly in some cases.

What is the Curse of Demon Slayer Mark?

Manifesting a Mark Comes With a Serious Side Effect

The Demon Slayer Mark blesses the bearer with incredible powers that make some of them even seem invincible. When faced with Muzan and his underlings, the mysterious marking becomes a necessity as some of them are too overwhelmingly powerful to fight even in groups. Manifesting the mark definitely gives members of the Demon Slayer Corps an edge in the battle, but it also comes with serious consequences.

Yoriichi might've been the perfect Demon Slayer, but what made him that way?

The Curse of the Demon Slayer Mark refers to the steep price that bearers of the mark have to pay for simply manifesting the mark. Every single demon slayer who awakens a mark dies before the age of 25. In case they awaken it after they have turned 25, they risk dying within a few hours. The incredible powers that an individual accumulates by virtue of the mark significantly reduce their lifespan.

It appears that Demon Slayer Mark is only meant for high-stakes situations when a combatant has made peace with death and is willing to put their lives on the line for the greater good. But it should not be shocking that it comes with such a negative influence on one's health.

Demon Slayer Mark is manifested in extremely life-threatening circumstances. Pushing oneself so far is naturally not good for the body. In fact, Muichiro even argues that people who awaken the mark are able to do so because they can survive the dangerous high body temperature and an abnormal heart rate. The trauma inflicted on the body probably ends up having serious side effects, which eventually lead to the shortening of the lifespan.

The Exception to the Rule

It is noteworthy that the first person to get the mark didn't actually manifest it. Back in the Sengoku era, Yoriichi Tsugikuni was born with the Demon Slayer Mark, and he subsequently helped other members of the corps awaken one. While the curse of the mark does shorten lifespan, it interestingly had no influence on Yoriichi, who lived well past the age of 80. It could be argued that he was not affected simply because he was born with the mark.

Interestingly, Yoriichi's brother, Michikatsu, was afraid of dying at 25, so he ended up accepting Muzan's offer and became the demon named Kokushibo. As fans probably already know, he went on to become Upper-Rank One and lived for hundreds of years. It appears that the curse of the Demon Slayer Mark is quite dangerous, but there are two ways one could potentially avoid it. Either by turning into a demon or by being born with a mark like Yoriichi. Since the latter is not an option for almost anyone else in history, demonification remains the only cure for premature death.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy's first installment is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 12, 2025.
