Despite not being serialized as a manga for about five years, interest in Demon Slayer has risen tremendously over the years. Much of this was down to the sensational release of the biggest anime movie of all time, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 — Akaza’s Return. This movie dropped in theaters starting July 2025, and it would be an understatement to call it a massive success. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle was so big that it shattered all Box Office records held by the franchise, or any other anime movie
Quite clearly, anime fans are obsessed with Demon Slayer and want to see more from the series. Sadly, however, Demon Slayer’s manga concluded in 2020. Since then, the creator, Koyoharu Gotouge, has been rather silent. However, while Koyoharu Gotouge might not return to Demon Slayer, the author is most likely looking to start a new manga and ride on the huge hype of Demon Slayer. In the past, the author had already expressed the desire to create a new manga in a fanbook.
Demon Slayer’s Creator Gotouge Has Already Teased A New Manga
Demon Slayer has cemented itself as one of the most successful manga series of all time. When it comes to anime and movies, they’re hugely successful all over the world. Demon Slayer has completely dominated the Japanese Box Office with both its movies being in the number 1 and number 2 spots. All this success has rubbed off on the manga as well. The Demon Slayer manga only has 23 volumes, but it currently has over 220 million copies in circulation. That’s the highest sales per volume of any other manga series in the world.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the original creator of the series, Koyoharu Gotouge. She has made Demon Slayer into what it is today, and while she has taken a leave from the series, fans of Demon Slayer would likely still have a look at what else she creates in the future. Koyoharu Gotouge has already stated that she wants to start a new manga. In one of Demon Slayer’s fanbooks, the author mentioned the desire to write a romantic comedy series. Even though it's been a while since the author stated this, the plan looks quite clear. As one of the most famous current mangakas in the world, this new manga could be a massive hit and a perfect replacement for Demon Slayer.
“After Demon Slayer, I want to draw a science fiction romantic comedy that will make people laugh until their stomachs hurt. I love old alien movies!” — Koyoharu Gotouge in Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook 2
Gotouge’s New Manga Will Be A Sci-Fi Comedy
Koyoharu Gotouge might definitely return to the manga industry someday, and when she does, her new series will be a huge departure from Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer was set in a fantasy version of Japan, and included battles against human-eating Demons. Gotouge’s next series will be very different, as it will focus on Sci-Fi elements in a romantic comedy, which would theoretically be somewhat similar to Dandadan. Instead of demons, her next manga could have to do with aliens. Of course, since the fanbook was released in 2021, Gotouge could have changed her mind. But for now, that’s the closest thing that the author has revealed when it comes to a new manga series.
Gotouge Has Yet To Start Work On The New Manga
Many fans are wondering when Gotouge could return to Weekly Shonen Jump and start serialization of her next manga. The truth is, nobody knows the exact date. There have been no statements concerning her next manga since the fanbook, so fans just have to wait and see what her next goal is. Right now, with Demon Slayer at its peak, would be the best time for her new series to kickstart as fans would be more willing to check the new work out. At the same time, it must be remembered that Weekly Shonen Jump itself is greatly suffering from a lack of amazing new gen shonen. Gotouge is a seasoned mangaka, and a return to Jump would help out the magazine greatly.
Whatever Koyoharu Gotouge comes up with will undoubtedly be a hit. However, it’s very hard to imagine it ever surpassing her peak with Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer’s fame seems impossible to recreate for any mangaka, new and old. It has already etched itself in manga history and will be fondly remembered for ages.
