The hype for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle continues with the theatrical release of Akaza Returns in US theaters. Fans have been patiently waiting, but now their patience is paying off as the first Infinity Castle movie delivers on the big screen.

Among these characters, Kiriya Ubuyashiki’s glow-up in the Infinity Castle movie has surprised fans, with many noting how different he looks compared to his earlier appearance in the anime and manga.

Kiriya Ubuyashiki’s First Appearance in Demon Slayer
Kiriya Ubuyashiki Initially Looked Like a Girl
- Anime Appearance: Season 1, Episode 4
- Manga Appearance: Chapter 6
It’s difficult for a child to grow up in the world of Demon Slayer, but life is harder for Kiriya Ubuyashiki, as he carries the heavy burden of leading the Demon Slayer Corps at such a very young age. Growing up, Amane and Kagaya raised Kiriya with a deep sense of duty, probably preparing him for his crucial role in the fight against Muzan and his army of demons later on.
At such a young age, Kiriya Ubuyashiki understands his role in the continuity of his lineage and the leadership of the Corps. Not only did Amane and Kagaya raise Kiriya as a female, but they also taught him to be wise beyond his years. This explains why Kiriya looked like a girl during Tanjiro Kamado’s Final Selection, where fans saw him wearing a purple kimono with feminine flower patterns.
At that time, Kiriya showed no emotions, as if he were a living doll, programmed to carry out his duties and responsibilities as an Ubuyashiki. Even when Genya Shinazugawa became violent with his sister, Kiriya remained stoic, showing a level of maturity that was also far beyond his years.
Kiriya Ubuyashiki’s Transformation in Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle
Kiriya Ubuyashiki Is the New Master of the Demon Slayer Corps
Fans who already watched the first Infinity Castle movie had a lot to say about Kiriya Ubuyashiki’s glow-up. The creepy-looking daughter of Amane and Kagaya in the Final Selection doesn’t exist anymore, as the new Master or Oyakata, of the Demon Slayer Corps is now wearing a kimono and haori similar to his deceased father. Gone is the female-raised Kiriya, and fans welcomed the 98th master of the demon slayers.
Because of this, most fans, especially anime-only viewers, did not recognize Kiriya Ubuyashiki at all, and some even thought that the first Infinity Castle movie completely introduced a new character. However, fans should know that Amane and Kagaya had five children, and Kiriya was the only son, effectively making him his father’s successor. He survived the explosion of the Ubuyashiki mansion, along with his two sisters, Kuina and Kanata.
Don't cry. Definitely do not stop your hands. We will not lose.—Kiriya Ubuyashiki
Unfortunately, Kiriya had to jump into the Oyakata position as soon as half of his family was dead, as part of his duty to lead the Demon Slayer Corps in the Infinity Castle. There’s no time for him to mourn their passing, and even if he wanted to, every moment spent mourning could put the lives of the many demon slayers at risk. Instead of crying, Kiriya immediately went to work, mapping the layout of the Infinity Castle to the best of his abilities.

Kiriya Ubuyashiki Has Big Shoes to Fill
Kagaya Ubuyashiki had a lot of trust and faith in his comrades, especially in his only son, Kiriya. His time may have been over, but his legacy continues to live on in Kiriya, who now carries the huge responsibility of leading the Demon Slayer Corps with the same enthusiasm, dedication, and integrity, especially while fighting the demons in the Infinity Castle.
Fans know how crucial Kiriya is in the final fight with Muzan Kibutsuji, as without him, the remaining demon slayers and Hashira would likely falter and lose hope, giving Muzan a chance to absorb Nezuko and overcome the sun. Kiriya's intelligence, memory, composure, and intuition make him a worthy successor and indispensable leader of the Demon Slayer Corps in their most important fight.
