What to Expect From Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4

The development of Deltarune has become a bit of a slow burn at this point. This is thanks to Undertale creator Toby Fox deciding to release the game in multiple chapters, rather than all at once. The community has been patiently waiting since the release of Chapter 2, and Toby Fox's latest development update has given fans a lot to look forward to with Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4.

Chapter 1 of Deltarune was first released in 2018, with Chapter 2 following a few years later in 2021. This means Deltarune may very well be due for Chapter 3 already, and anticipation has only grown thanks to a recent announcement about Deltarune Chapter 5. While such a late stage in the game may still be a ways off, it seems that Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are just around the corner.

Deltarune Chapter 5 Announcement Has Exciting Implications for Chapters 3 and 4 Release Date

In a recent Twitter post by Toby Fox, he stated that he is "working on Ch5 every day". If the development of Chapter 5 is progressing smoothly, one would assume that the development of Chapters 3 and 4 is nearing completion. Toby Fox confirmed as much, stating earlier that quality assurance testing of Chapter 3 is in its final stages.

This is an exciting update to be sure, but it has already left many fans wondering when they can hear more news. Thankfully, in the last post of his thread, Toby Fox casually announced that he plans to have the next newsletter in late December of this year. Considering the shadow-drop nature of the last two chapters, Chapter 3 may be released near the time of this newsletter.

Deltarune's Next Chapters Have Big Shoes to Fill

As a follow-up to Undertale, one of the most highly acclaimed indie games of all time, Deltarune already has a lot of weight on its shoulders. Chapter 1 served as an intriguing introduction to the new world players would get to know later on in Deltarune, while Chapter 2 set the bar even higher by executing many concepts that had been set up so far. With the warm reception of both of its predecessors, the stakes are even higher for Deltarune Chapter 3.

With that in mind, there are some areas in which fans can expect Deltarune to swerve in brand-new directions, and other areas where the game is more likely to simply stay the course. This goes for general areas such as the inventive puzzles, electrifying soundtrack, and incredibly witty dialogue. General characteristics of Toby Fox's work aside, Deltarune has also laid quite a few threads that Deltarune Chapter 3 seems likely to continue.

Potential Twists and Turns in the Future of Deltarune

First and foremost, Deltarune Chapter 2 made Noelle a much more prominent character. Noelle has become an integral part of Deltarune's story, and she seems likely to stay close to the party in the future. In fact, it may even be possible that Chapter 3 introduces another major supporting character. After all, the Overworld has plenty of intrigue left for players to unravel in the coming chapters. However, Deltarune has already set up other supporting characters to take the stage.

Lancer should almost definitely rise to the forefront, considering players have done battle with both of his parents. In fact, it's possible that he could serve as the final boss of Chapter 3, if it follows the trends of the prior two. However, the general lack of an overarching antagonist is still somewhat of a mystery, and this is perhaps the biggest thing fans can look forward to in Deltarune Chapter 4.

While Chapter 3 should capitalize on the strengths of its predecessors, Chapter 4 is much more likely to take a big swerve. Considering Deltarune will span seven chapters, players will be pretty deep into the narrative by the time Chapter 4 rolls around. While Chapter 3 can wrap up the game's beginning, Chapter 4 will likely lay the foundation for Deltarune's eventual ending.

Deltarune has held plenty of secrets so far, but the mystery is admittedly a huge part of the appeal. Chapter 2 left players with more questions than answers, so there's nothing to say that Chapter 3 and 4 won't do the same. However, if Chapter 5 is really as close as Toby Fox has suggested, then players can expect the story to take a clear shape much sooner rather than later.
