Kojima Productions and 505 Games shocked everyone earlier this month when they revealed and simultaneously released an Xbox Series X/S port of Death Stranding: Director's Cut. Death Stranding also received a 50% discount on Xbox consoles upon its launch, which was even more surprising. The game normally costs $40 on Microsoft's platform, but Xbox players can currently grab it for a mere $20.

Death Stranding was originally a PlayStation-owned IP; the game was funded, published, and produced by the console manufacturer itself. Nonetheless, it was still able to come to Xbox consoles because KojiPro recently bought the rights to Death Stranding from Sony Interactive Entertainment. While nothing has been confirmed yet, this unexpected multiplatform pivot from Kojima Productions may suggest that some of its other titles, like the upcoming Xbox game OD, will also come to more consoles in the future.

Death Stranding Coming to Xbox Makes a PlayStation Port of OD More Likely

OD is Hideo Kojima's First Collaborative Effort with Xbox Game Studios

Hideo Kojima has often collaborated with PlayStation throughout most of his career, but for the first time ever, he's working on a project with Xbox instead. One of the upcoming games that Kojima Productions is working on is called OD, and it's being published by Xbox Game Studios. While Kojima's partnership with the first-party publisher was originally announced in 2022, OD itself wasn't formally revealed until The Game Awards 2023.

Not much is known about OD at the moment, but Kojima Productions has revealed that it is a horror game of some sort and that it's going to feature a star-studded cast. It's not clear at all what OD's gameplay will be like, but leaked footage from 2022 does suggest that it will feature both first- and third-person perspectives.

According to Kojima, OD will utilize Xbox's cloud gaming technology in some unspecified way to create a "unique" and "totally new style of game — or rather, a new form of media."

OD May Be an Xbox Exclusive at Launch, But It Will Probably Come to PlayStation at Some Point

Microsoft and Kojima Productions have yet to announce what platforms OD will be on, but it will presumably be an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive, at least for a limited period. It's possible, if not likely, that the game will come to rival consoles in the future. In the last few months, Microsoft has expressed its intent to bring its first-party exclusives to non-Xbox platforms, specifically the PS5 and the Nintendo Switch. Four of the company's games have already made the jump to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, and more are on the way. With that in mind, it wouldn't be that surprising if Microsoft decided to bring OD to the PS5 shortly after its debut on Xbox and PC.

Microsoft ported Grounded, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves to PlayStation and/or Nintendo consoles in early 2024. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages, two Microsoft-developed games, are also coming to PS5 in 2025.

Even if Microsoft had still been adamant about Xbox exclusivity, OD might have come to PlayStation consoles regardless. The fact that Death Stranding is on Xbox, despite Sony's heavy involvement with the game, is proof of this. All in all, it seems that Kojima wants to bring his games to as many platforms as possible going forward. Furthermore, if Kojima Productions owns the rights to the OD IP as it does with Death Stranding, then there’s an even greater chance of the game coming to PlayStation 5 down the line.
