While it has been around for quite a while at this point, the MCU is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. With this massive shift to multiversal storytelling, it’s safe to say that just about anything could happen at any time. There have been a ton of rumors about Deadpool 3 that have been ongoing pretty much since Disney acquired the film rights to the character, among many others. Just about every actor who’s played a superhero has been rumored to potentially appear in the film, and it’s not hard to see why. Major cameos aside, it’s possible that Deadpool 3 is the key to the future of the MCU, and there are more than a few ways how something like that could end up happening.

What Is The Plot Of Deadpool 3?

While the world has been wondering when it will finally get a taste of what is in store with Deadpool 3, it won’t be a surprise if nothing major is given away until the first teaser trailer for the movie finally drops. There have been a few cheeky videos posted about the movies from the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, but all anyone really knows about the movie is that it will feature Deadpool and everyone’s favorite Wolverine in action together. Based on other teases and the fact that the incredibly meta Deadpool is joining the MCU, we can also deduce that the movie will likely have some multiversal shenanigans in some form even if it’s been confirmed that time travel will play a role.

Outside of that, surprisingly little is actually known about the plot. There are other clues that can give some idea like those who are confirmed for the cast, and tiny hints from the cast themselves in interviews, but in a world where it’s easy to read into every little thing, even those don’t mean much. What won’t be a surprise is if Deadpool somehow manages to make his way from the Fox Universe of films to the Disney MCU that everyone knows and loves by the end of the post-credits scenes.

There really isn’t even a hint as to what the actual conflict of the film will be, except that actress Emma Corrin is said to be playing the film's antagonist. While that can help to provide some clues for potential villains, it’s just as likely that Deadpool 3 shocks the world by showing the true driving conflict of the future of the MCU in what, on the surface, looks to be another delightful but not majorly universe-impacting film. That conflict has already been hinted at and mentioned on a few different occasions, and with time travel and potentially universal travel in the mix for Deadpool 3, it might be time to start looking hard at universal incursions in the MCU.

What Are Marvel’s Incursions?

While incursions are a specific type of apocalyptic event that is well fleshed out in the Marvel comics, they are less explained in the MCU thus far. Essentially, an MCU incursion is an event in which the bounds of two different universes collapse, causing them to fall in on one another, and eventually resulting in the destruction of all life that is incapable of adequately defending itself. Seeing how the ability to withstand a universal collapse isn’t common, it’s safe to say that there aren’t all that many figures in the MCU that could survive such an event.

Most talk of incursions has briefly sprung up in the films thanks to Doctor Strange and Kang The Conqueror. What little MCU information we have on them makes it clear that they are a significant threat, as in Sinister Strange’s reality, he’s the only person left alive following a multiversal incursion. In fact, Doctor Strange and Clea are out there somewhere battling against an incursion that Strange supposedly caused. At the same time, Kang has admitted that the multiversal Kang war caused countless incursions throughout the multiverse.

It’s not yet clear what it is that specifically causes incursions outside of multiversal travel itself, but we do know that, in the comics, incursions are a predestined fate. The Beyonders actually set the incursions into motion through the creation of the Molecule Man (a being with the power to manipulate molecules) as a bomb. There’s no way to know if this will end up playing into the MCU explanation of events or not, but due to what we already know about MCU incursions, this makes it possible that Deadpool might actually be the person who dooms the current MCU.

It’s already been teased that Deadpool 3 will feature some kind of time travel, but with everyone expecting some kind of explanation for how Deadpool will shift from the Fox Universe to the MCU, it’s possible that it will also feature multiversal travel. It’s no secret that Deadpool is a bit of a spacey anti-hero, making it possible that he would have no clue just how much gravity is behind all of his actions. The bounds of the MCU have already cracked and allowed characters from the Sonyverse to enter, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Deadpool found a way to do the same for the Fox Universe.

The next issue here is that if Deadpool is arriving from the Fox universe, some might think that it would open the doors for others to arrive from years past. A clever way to avoid that entirely would be if the universe itself was a victim of an incursion caused by Deadpool’s inevitable jump to the MCU. If that is the case, this would show that the already heavily teased concept of an incoming incursion has begun and that all bets are off for the future of the MCU.

It may sound too early to introduce such a problem into the MCU in these new phases, but it would provide the perfect set-up to introduce all the new characters that fans have been waiting years for. The Fantastic Four and their most famous villain Doctor Doom practically specialize in these types of events, and while mutants in the MCU are already teased, that’s not to say that a group of X-Men couldn’t arrive as refugees from a dying universe, setting up a new team in the MCU. It may sound far-fetched to make a film like Deadpool 3 as important as all of that sounds, but it would also be one of the most shocking twists possible as Deadpool is formally introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
