The upcoming Dead by Daylight spinoff game The Casting of Frank Stone is now partly playable after developer Supermassive released a short demo for the game that fans can check out for free. Supermassive launched the demo on Steam alongside the official trailer for the game, which serves as a prequel to the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight.

Supermassive is known for its output of theatrical horror games that play out as interactive movies, in a sense, facing players with decisions about the story that can affect which characters survive to the end. The studio made a name for itself with the PS4 console exclusive Until Dawn before it went on to make the horror series The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry.

Now, players can experience a little bit of Supermassive's first foray into the Dead by Daylight universe with the new playable demo on the Steam store page for The Casting of Frank Stone. The demo lets fans play through the prologue of the game, which has them control Sam Green, a police officer investigating a report of a missing child that eventually ties into the in-game setting of Dead by Daylight.

Free Demo Gives DBD Fans Their First Taste of The Casting of Frank Stone

While the demo gives fans a taste of what The Casting of Frank Stone will look like when it releases on September 3, progress attained in it will reportedly not carry over into the main game. Still, the demo is enough to let players make multiple different decisions to see which outcomes may result from them, giving it a solid amount of replay value and teasing what's to come in the first narrative-driven game in the Dead by Daylight franchise.

One of the biggest new features on the way in The Casting of Frank Stone is the cutting room floor mechanic, which allows players to revisit specific decisions throughout each chapter without replaying the entire episode. This will make it easier to see different outcomes based on alternate story choices and hunt down a variety of collectibles and references to the growing Dead by Daylight universe.

Despite middling reviews on some of its earlier titles in The Dark Pictures Anthology, Supermassive has proved to have significant staying power with its choice-based horror games. Not only has Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive handed it the reigns to its most popular IP, but the company is also working on an upcoming remake of Until Dawn and a new Dark Pictures entry.
