Summary

  • Speculation is high that the next Dead by Daylight killer may be from the Tokyo Ghoul series.
  • An audio recording found in the game has led many players to believe the next killer might be a Tokyo Ghoul character.
  • The delayed new chapter in Dead by Daylight will include quality-of-life features, perks, and keyboard and mouse control for console players.

Dead by Daylight players have been digging into some secrets teased by the games' developers in anticipation of the launch of the next season, and many think the next killer might be someone from the Tokyo Ghoul series of anime and manga. Dead by Daylight's development team hasn't commented on who the next killer will be, but a single audio file is lending credence to this theory.

The Tokyo Ghoul series tells a story of a world where humans coexist among ghouls, creatures who look like humans but who must consume human flesh in order to avoid entering a feral state. The Tokyo Ghoul anime celebrated its 10th anniversary last summer, and the media franchise has won multiple awards since the manga's launch in 2011, with the original manga and a sequel series, Tokyo Ghoul: re, having more than 47 million copies in circulation.

Being quiet is crucial in Dead by Daylight, and these characters are quite the opposite for players wanting (or avoiding) an added challenge.

The driving force behind the Tokyo Ghoul theory is an in-game audio recording discovered in the exit area by YouTuber Fricking Nick, who looked into a hint from a recent developer update that a secret could be found on that map. The audio recording, which plays in-game on a radio found inside a small office building that can't be entered, is hard to make out due to background noise and the message being intentionally garbled. But a growing number of players report hearing the word "ghouls" many times throughout its broadcast. This has led them to the conclusion that the next killer may be one of Tokyo Ghoul's strongest ghouls, and they're not ruling out main character Ken Kaneki.

Dead by Daylight Easter Egg May Hint at Tokyo Ghoul Killer

This isn't the first time that fans have seen a reference to ghouls in the asymmetrical horror game. Dead by Daylight's Chapter 31 update from nearly a year ago included a movie marquee in The Unknown's map that reads "The Ghoul's Lament." Additionally, some players believe The Ghoul's voiced lines have hinted at other killers that were added to the game after it, such as "Have you seen my dog?" Teasing at The Houndmaster and "I lived in dungeons long forgotten" hinting at the popular Dungeons and Dragons crossover and the addition of Vecna.

The newest chapter of Dead by Daylight has been delayed for three weeks after being moved off its original launch date of February 18, 2025, with Behaviour Interactive explaining that its developers need additional time to implement some quality-of-life features and deal with other internal issues in the game. However, there's plenty of additional content coming in the next several months, including a new quest system and additional perk presents, which will be added between April and June, and keyboard and mouse control for console players, which will be implemented sometime between July and the end of the year.
