DayZ Servers Are Having Serious Problems

DayZ is now available for free for PS Plus Essential subscribers, but unfortunately, it looks like the game's PlayStation servers are struggling under the weight of so many eager players. The multiplayer hardcore survival game has continued to find success since being released in Early Access in 2013, and while many are now being given the opportunity to try DayZ for no cost, social media is being flooded by users claiming that they are unable to connect.

Officially released in its full capacity for PC in 2018 and making the leap to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2019, DayZ managed to reach its all-time peak player count on Steam in October 2024 following the release of the Frostline DLC. The expansion invited players to explore the icy world of Sakhal, with freezing temperatures and limited supplies making the hardcore survival title even more difficult. While many players were frustrated by the DLC's $26.99 price tag, reviews have been largely positive, with users in particular praising its added difficulty and new weapons. Now, those who have yet to experience DayZ are getting the chance to do so for free, but developer Bohemia Interactive may not have been fully prepared for the influx of new players.

DayZ’s PlayStation Servers Are Being Overloaded Following the Game's Release for PS Plus Essential Subscribers

On the official DayZ forums and subreddit, many users are claiming that they are getting a "BIOS Error" when attempting to play the survival game on PlayStation 4. Yesterday, the free PS Plus Games for August 2025 went live, with DayZ available for users with a subscription to the Essential tier. This likely led to a spike in players, and the game's developer may not have estimated the impact this may have on the game's servers. At the time of writing, this issue is still ongoing, and it's unclear when it will be remedied.

In June, Bohemia Interactive announced DayZ: Badlands, a massive new expansion slated to bring a whole new region to the game when it launches in 2026. Badlands will be set in the Nasdara Province, a war-torn desert region that will introduce plenty of new dangers for players to face, along with new weapons and infected variants. If the uptick in players following the game's Frostline expansion is any indication, DayZ may set another concurrent player count record following the release of this new DLC next year.

Along with DayZ, PS Plus subscribers can now snag the popular Soulslike title Lies of P for free, along with the fighting game My Hero One's Justice 2. Additionally, Sword of the Sea, an adventure title from the studio behind The Pathless and Abzu, will be added to PS Plus Extra as a day one game on August 19.
