While Days Gone has a number of storylines at work through the game’s 30+ hour story mode, there is one thread involving Deacon St. John’s wife, Sarah that permeates throughout. However, those seeking answers immediately may want to know what happened to Sarah in Days Gone, either because curiosity got the best of them or because they don’t actually want to finish the game.

Spoilers will follow.

What Happened to Sarah?

In the story of Days Gone, players learn that Sarah was stabbed while trying to escape from Farewell, Oregon. Deacon and his fellow Mongrels MC member Boozer are working with Sarah to try to avoid the Freaker hordes, riots, and looting but eventually, they come upon a despondent kid (infected?) Who turns and stabs Sarah while she is trying to help.

With Sarah badly wounded, the trio eventually makes their way to the roof of a building where a government helicopter is evacuating essential personnel. Deacon convinces the man in charge of loading the helicopter, O’Brian, to let he and Sarah onboard, but eventually Deacon decides to stay behind. O’Brian tells Deacon that the helicopter is headed to a refugee camp in Three Fingered Jack and that’s the last he sees of Sarah…for a while.

Is Sarah Alive in Days Gone?

Through dialogue and flashback, players learn that the refugee camp was overrun and Deacon never found Sarah. He assumes she is dead and takes up a life as a drifter, helping camps complete jobs on his motorcycle.

But throughout the course of the first acts of Days Gone, Deacon learns new information to suggest that Sarah might be alive. For starters, he sees O’Brian, the government agent that was on the same helicopter that Deacon thought was overrun in the refugee camp.

By working with and for O’Brian, Deacon learns that some people were evacuated out of the refugee camp and moved to another location in Silver Lake. However, O’Brian says that no citizens were part of the survivors. But Deacon eventually clarifies that Sarah had high-level government clearance and could have been part of the evacuation group. O’Brian confirms that she was but the Silver Lake area was taken over by an armed militia.

Eventually, the Sarah is alive/Sarah is dead questions come to a head when Deacon visits the base of operations for the militia in Crater Lake. There he finally sees Sarah is alive and working for the militia’s R&D to try to develop weapons to combat the Freaker outbreak.

It may be a little convoluted in how the game gets there, but eventually Days Gone does reveal what happened to Sarah. And from there things will only start to get more interesting. Read The Best War Games’s Days Gone review for our full thoughts on the game.
