There have been plenty of unique takes on the zombie genre through the years, but Days Gone has gained a cult following with its portrayal. Despite mixed critical reviews at launch, many who have played Days Gone fell in love with the game. The open-world zombie survival story follows biker Deacon St. John in a post-apocalyptic world where factions are fighting to stay alive. Now, rumors of a PS5 remaster on the way have excited many.
Days Gone has been popping back up in the news recently. The game's director was not exactly appreciative of the cameo in Astro Bot, and now new rumors of a "less exciting" PS5 remaster than Horizon Zero Dawn have caused speculation about it being Days Gone. VGC's Jordan Middler responded to these rumors about this "less exciting" remaster by hinting that it could be Days Gone. If this is the case, then fans of the open-world zombie tale may rejoice, but it would also sting many in the fan base.
A Days Gone PS5 Remaster is a Reminder Of What Will Never Be
No Possibility Of a Sequel Would Loom Over a Remaster
The massive hordes players face really helped Days Gone stand out in a genre that struggles with being oversaturated. Although not a perfect game, the world and characters featured in Days Gone made it a unique experience, which has inspired a lot of demand for a sequel. Unfortunately, that will probably never happen. Despite fan requests, Days Gone's director has stated that a sequel will never happen due to a lack of interest from Sony's higher-ups. Unfortunately, the game wasn't the financial success that Sony was hoping for, which makes sequel talks unlikely.
After the shocking cliffhanger ending of Days Gone, the bad news of a sequel never happening hurts even more. If a PS5 remaster is on the horizon, then it could feel like kicking the IP while it is already down. A PS5 remaster implies that there is demand for the game, so not considering a sequel may be confusing at that point.
A rumored Sony State of Play event is speculated to happen on September 24. Remaster claims have suggested that Sony will reveal the mysterious project at the supposed event, so these Days Gone remaster rumors will likely be confirmed or debunked very soon.
There are many great open-world games that are deserving of a sequel, and Days Gone is near the top of the list. The biker-influenced take on a zombie-ravaged world was a breath of fresh air for many players. Traversal in the zombie genre usually involves going by foot or even horse, like in The Last of Us Part 2, but bringing motorcycles into the equation was a really cool way to approach exploring the map. As rumors of a new Sony State of Play continue to swirl, there will hopefully be more answers and insight given to this speculation in a matter of days.
Days Gone May Just Live On as a One-Off Cult Classic
Although a PS5 remaster of Days Gone would be a bittersweet announcement, there is also the possibility that this is simply a rumor that will soon be proven false. The rumor mill claims that the remaster Sony is about to announce is "less exciting," and marking Days Gone as something fans wouldn't be excited about isn't entirely accurate.
Days Gone developer Bend Studio is currently working on a new IP for the PS5.
Unfortunately, it seems as though all hope may be lost for a Days Gone comeback. Of course, Sony could eventually change its mind, but Bend Studio seems pretty convinced that this won't ever happen. If Days Gone gets a PS5 remaster, it will at least get an inkling of a second life, even if it's not the way many were hoping for.
