David Wald, voice actor, and ADR director, declared on his X (formerly Twitter) account today that he is leaving the role as Gajeel in the English Fairy Tail dub. He also stated he won't be returning to Crunchyroll's studio.
Back in October, Wald stated on social media that Crunchyroll (previously Funimation) opened his private mail in the last 5 years and distributed it to employees — that mail would be things friends or maybe fans sent him. He found it out because someone sent him a package and shared with him a photo of the contents and tracking information. Following the allegations, a Crunchyroll spokesperson told ANN they were investigating the situation.
Wald's new post on X/Twitter indicates that there might be even more allegations to come. He alleges Crunchyroll's abuses are "far too much" and promises to tell "all of them" soon, in his Twitch account. Here's the full message:
What's Crunchyroll's Response to the Allegations?
According to a previous post, some items were returned to him after being found on a "giveaway table". He also stated he didn't think employees were to blame, as they probably just thought the items were freebies from the company.
Crunchyroll did not address the new information yet. The previous statement obtained by ANN in October is as follows:
Anime fans have a special connection with dub voice talent and that emotional expression is important in fueling more love of anime content. We are currently investigating the matter regarding the allegation of undelivered fan mail to a voice actor. We respect the privacy of all of our voice actors and do not intentionally open mail or packages not intended for Crunchyroll. Any fan mail should be sent directly to talent and their management.
What Might Be Coming?
Since Wald will likely make new allegations in his Twitch account in the near future (he didn't state when he plans to go live with the information), Crunchyroll will probably wait for it to address the subject, if any statement is made at all. Although Wald seems to have learned more than he expected, we will still know the severity of the allegations. Both Wald and Crunchyroll haven't mentioned any ongoing litigation tackling this subject.
Who is David Wald?
David Wald is a voice actor who usually works with anime dub. He started dubbing in 2005, with minor roles (as it usually is), but have already played several major characters, such as Gajeel Redfox (the role he is now leaving), Hannes in Attack on Titan, Bulat in Akame ga Kill!!, and he also played Master Chief in Halo Legends.
He is openly gay, an advocate of positive LGBT representation, and directed dubs of yuri and BL/yaoi titles, such as The Stranger by the Shore, Kase-san and Morning Glories, Bloom into You, and Love Stage.
