Since its official full release in 2016, Darkest Dungeon has had many accolades and achievements that highlight how special of a game it was. In just 2016 alone, developer Red Hook Studios had sold more than a million copies across all platforms, showing that demand for the game had been massive since the beginning. This year, the game hits another huge milestone as sales numbers continue to grow even more.
With its sequel still in early access at the moment of writing, fans of Darkest Dungeon continue to search for a rogue-lite fix that will satiate their tastes. Even sales from the original game are still moving to this very day due to the fan support and recognition the intellectual property has received since its Kickstarter inception in 2014.
During an update made by the developer regarding the progress of Darkest Dungeon 2, it was announced that the original game had just surpassed "an amazing milestone of 6 million copies" sold, with an additional byline stating that the game had sold 16 million copies total including the game's downloadable content.
As of last year, September 2021, sales for the base game had already reached 5 million units. That's almost a million-per-year increase since its release in 2016, hence it isn't surprising to see that after another year, another million units were sold upping the number of sales to 6 million. Given that mod support for Darkest Dungeon is still very active, interest in the game seems to remain relatively high. Add the fact that a lot of unique gaming mechanics were introduced and implemented properly here, the gameplay is still unmatched.
While Darkest Dungeon 2's early access is only currently available on Microsoft Windows, those looking for a dungeon-crawler rogue-like with unmatched brutal difficulty can purchase the original Darkest Dungeon and the complete DLCs on other platforms outside of Windows. From home consoles such as Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to handhelds such as iOS and Nintendo Switch, consumers have a lot of options to purchase the game on very affordable platforms while waiting for the sequel to drop.
Darkest Dungeon has also spawned countless DLCs and other spin-offs which have also contributed to the continuous market for the game. The most recent update was free content entitled "Butcher's Circus" which added a player-versus-player mode within Darkest Dungeon creating even more replayability options. This, along with the board game spin-off, has given more value and name recall to the brand. Darkest Dungeon 2 is still in its early stages and will still have to undergo the test of time if it can outdo or even match the first game. However, the original game continues to set milestones that will keep the IP going strong.
