Summary
- Directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson studied the Daredevil season 3 prison fight scene.
- Marvel Studios revamped Born Again amid the 2023 strike, adding Moorhead and Benson.
- Born Again promises to maintain Netflix Daredevil's violence, tension, and character depth.
Daredevil: Born Again directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson revealed which scene from the third season of the Netflix show inspired their work on the Disney Plus continuation.
When Daredevil: Born Again production was put on hold due to the 2023 actors' and writers' strikes, Marvel Studios reviewed the footage and decided the series needed a creative overhaul despite six episodes being filmed. As part of this significant retooling, Daredevil: Born Again added Moorhead and Benson as directors, with Dario Scardapane brought on board to serve as showrunner, pen new episodes, and write additional material for the existing episodes. While Moorhead and Benson previously worked as directors as Loki season 2 and Moon Knight, Daredevil: Born Again is a decidedly more grounded entry in Marvel Television's Disney Plus library. Fortunately, both filmmakers studied Netflix's Daredevil series to prepare for Born Again.

Daredevil: Born Again Directors Studied One of the Netflix Show's Most Iconic Fight Scenes
During an interview with Collider, Moorhead and Benson discussed what it was like moving from Moon Knight and Loki season 2 to Daredevil: Born Again. Moorhead noted that because they love the original Netflix show, the only apprehension about tackling Daredevil: Born Again was that they didn't want to let the fans or themselves down. Fortunately, everyone involved with Daredevil: Born Again were fans of the Netflix show, so the directing duo could "take to it easily and check all of our own instincts." Benson added that they had studied the famous prison fight scene from Netflix's Daredevil season to improve their work as filmmakers. So, it was a "special experience" to apply what they learned to Daredevil: Born Again fight scenes.
Something that’s actually really interesting, and I never thought about this way, but you know the famous oner in the prison in Season 3? We've studied that oner just to learn from it as filmmakers in general. It's so interesting to go from studying that and then being, rightfully so, obligated to take your swing at your attempt at it. It was a really special experience.
Benson referred to the prison fight scene in the Daredevil season 3 episode "Blindsided." Regarded as one of the best Daredevil episodes, "Blindsided" finds Matt Murdock infiltrating a prison seeking information on Wilson Fisk's machinations. However, Fisk anticipated Murdock's visit and arranged for prisoners to be released from their cells. Murdock is forced to fight through the inmates and the guards on Fisk's payroll to escape the prison in a roughly 10-minute action scene that the filmmakers claim was shot in a single take. The prison riot is regarded as one of Daredevil's best fight scenes for its camerawork, fight choreography, and performances.
Hearing that Moorhead and Benson were students of the Netflix Daredevil show should relieve fans. When Daredevil: Born Again was announced as a Disney Plus series, some fans were concerned that the showrunners would scale back on the Netflix show's violence due to Disney's family-friendly reputation. While the violence wasn't the sole ingredient that made Netflix's Daredevil a success, it was key to helping the series stand out from other superhero projects. It also added tension to the story, as fans knew that even if characters managed to survive fight scenes, they would be severely injured. Fortunately, Marvel Studios supported Daredevil: Born Again's brutal story, encouraging the show's creative team to go further with the violence and blood.
Of course, the Daredevil: Born Again showrunner's criticisms of the Netflix show's dialogue scenes had some fans concerned that the creative team was missing what made the original series so beloved. However, the first reactions to Daredevil: Born Again indicate that everyone involved has delivered on the quiet character moments and the brutal fight scenes. Fans don't have to wait much longer until they can judge for themselves.
Daredevil: Born Again premieres on March 4, 2025, on Disney Plus.
