This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episode 4 Much of Dardevil: Born Again up to Episode 4 of the Disney+ series has been mostly about two men. On one side is Matt Murdock. On the other is Wilson Fisk. Both men have spent the first three episodes trying to forge lives that allow them to leave their darker sides behind. Murdock is doing his very best to leave Daredevil behind. Fisk, especially as shown in the fourth episode, is truly trying to do what he thinks will “save” New York and in the process, leave Kingpin in the past.

However, as shown in “Sic Semper Systema,” leaving those other personalities behind are not as easy as either man thought. Every now and then they come through and show up for a minute. Daredevil has come out every now and then, especially when he was going up against corrupt cops coming for a witness. “Sic Semper Systema,” roughly translated to “thus always to the established order,” shows that both men are losing their fight to keep their alter egos buried deep.

This episode of Daredevil: Born Again starts off with one of Fisk’s closest advisors out clubbing with BB Uhrich and an unnamed friend, and it’s clear that the guerilla reporter is using Daniel to get information about the Fisk administration. Daniel dutifully obliges, telling a story about big plans for the city’s garbage removal.

That night out clubbing comes back to bite Daniel in the butt when Uhrich posts a story about the garbage plans that greatly anger Fisk to the point where he gets very close to the kind of rage that usually ended up with someone dead in the original Daredevil show. However, Daniel steps up and takes ownership of the leak and apologizes. Originally thinking he’s going to be fired, Fisk likely sees a bit of a young Wilson Fisk in Daniel and ends up telling him that he’ll get one more (and only one more) chance. The allusion is that Daniel won’t just be fired if he screws up again.

The other big Wilson Fisk storyline in this episode of Daredevil: Born Again is the marriage counseling with Vanessa. The audience finally learns what’s really between the couple as Vanessa admits she had an affair with a man named Adam. Wilson claims that while he had a talk with Adam, he didn’t do anything more than talk to him. Vanessa clearly thinks something more than just a talk happened.

Muse Doing His Work

While Fisk is busy running the city and dealing with the more politician-like part of being Mayor, Matt Murdock is trying to be the lawyer for the downtrodden and his next client is somehow in Leroy who first seems like a difficult client who has a massive attitude and this leads Murdock to plead him out and think he deserves a thank you. However a conversation with Leroy where his client explains how ridiculous being locked up at all for stealing caramel corn brings Matt around to realizing that the system - or the established order - is truly screwed up.

The biggest and most exciting part of the fourth episode of Daredevil: Born Again is the final, official return of Frank Castle AKA The Punisher. Several things were accomplished with his return, even if it was very brief. The first was to establish that not only did he not kill the White Tiger in the previous episode, but he’s not remotely tied to the police who keep using his symbol.

He’s also in this episode of Daredevil: Born Again in order to explain to Matt that the pain he’s feeling after Foggy’s death is normal. And that he should also stop trying to deny the pain is there and give in. In essence, become Daredevil again.

How Does Daredevil: Born Again Episode 4 End?

Both Men Are Losing The Fight To Their Darkness

After a rather long day running the city, Fisk seems to be settling in for a quiet dinner. However, he’s having dinner alone as Vanessa isn’t there. Or at least it looks like he’s having dinner alone at first. Very quickly it becomes obvious he’s not the only person in the room. Adam is there, locked away in a fashion that makes it clear he’s been locked in the room for quite a while.

Meanwhile, Matt has had a romantic evening with Heather, but he can’t sleep. He first goes to his closet and looks over a row of Daredevil helmets. While he’s not going all the way back, he does take out his special batons and heads to the roof, to practice with them. It certainly appears he’s starting to think it’s time to put the whole costume back on.

Muse Shows Just How Demented He Is

The very last scenes of this episode of Daredevil: Born Again shed even more light on what is one of the more demented villains that has appeared in either Daredevil series. Carrying the body into his lair, he sets the man who is still alive down on a table.

Above both of them are bodies who appear to be very dead strung up to the ceiling. Muse sticks a suction tube into his new victim and starts to draw out his blood. The episode ends with the man screaming in either pain or terror or both.
