The Cyberpunk 2077-inspired anime, Edgerunners, is officially getting a second part, as confirmed during the series’ panel at Anime Expo 2025. Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and produced by the Japanese anime studio Trigger, the Netflix-backed series originally premiered in 2022. It consisted of ten episodes and followed the story of David Martinez, a troubled teenager in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe who decides to become a mercenary.
This year's Anime Expo delivered plenty of exciting news for anime fans. The convention also featured a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners panel hosted by YouTuber Joey Bizinger, also known as The Anime Man. The panel included writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor, along with the voice actors for Lucy Kushinada and David Martinez. Later in the event, the first season's director, Hiroyuki Imaishi, joined the panel as well to share the exciting news with fans.
Cyberpunk 2 Gets Exciting Update From CD Projekt Red
CD Projekt Red gives a promising update on the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, which was announced back in 2022 as 'Project Orion.'
After revisiting some of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' most memorable moments, the Anime Expo panel announced the show's upcoming second part. Edgerunners 2 will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who directed the acclaimed sixth episode of the first season. Notably, Ikarashi's episode remains one of the highest-rated of the series. A poster was also shared with the audience, depicting a much darker atmosphere compared to the first part. While there's no release date yet, the new season is set to arrive on Netflix in the near future.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Will Be 'More Raw'
According to writer Bartosz Sztybor, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be "more raw, more grounded." He described the first part as a "romanticized" take on life as an edgerunner in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The upcoming season, however, will aim to reveal the harsh reality behind it. One indication of this grittier tone is that the trailer couldn't be shown publicly. As panel host Joey Bizinger explained, the footage was so bloody it had to be screened behind closed doors.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will once again be produced by Trigger, the team behind the original season. However, as new director Kai Ikarashi explained, some fresh talent has joined the crew to help bring the next installment to life. While the series remains set in the dystopian world of Cyberpunk 2077, it will likely follow an entirely new cast of characters.
Anime Expo 2025 also brought another piece of exciting news for fans: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is getting a complete Blu-ray box set. The bundle will include a special booklet, a storyboard book for the final episode, a 2-year anniversary poster, and three animation cell sheets. Pre-orders open on August 26, with global sales beginning on October 28. Pricing for the set has yet to be announced.
