Nearly five years later, Cyberpunk 2077 has risen from the ashes of its launch and has become one of the most loved RPGs around. The dystopian world of Night City now feels more alive than ever, making Cyberpunk 2077 a game filled with compelling characters and a story that hinges on taking down society's corporate overlords.

The game's success has now made a sequel possible. Codenamed Project Orion, there is very little known about this project, as it's in the early stages of its development. There's no telling when the game will be ready, but it could launch on an unlikely console. With the Switch 2 apparently able to run Cyberpunk 2077 successfully, Nintendo now has the potential to embrace a fresh market, and when Project Orion sees the light of day, it could prove to be a fun time on this upcoming console.

This overlooked character’s story hits harder than expected—especially when the credits roll and Night City doesn’t forget.

After Cyberpunk 2077, Project Orion Could Truly Test the Limits of the Nintendo Switch 2

A Sequel is Bound to Be Even Bigger and Better

The hope for any sequel is for it to be a stronger experience and story than its predecessor. Of course, this is far easier said than done, but Project Orion is in a strong position to one-up Cyberpunk 2077. It's no secret that Cyberpunk 2077's initial release back in 2020 was a huge hiccup for developer CD Projekt Red. The game was a buggy mess, but the studio has likely learned from the experience, which can potentially make Project Orion an even better game overall. If Project Orion were to release in better shape than its predecessor, Switch 2 players also getting a bite will only make its launch more successful. However, there's an even bigger reason why Project Orion could excel on the Switch 2, and it all revolves around the former's theorized multiplayer gameplay.

Project Orion was officially confirmed in 2022.

CD Projekt Red Job Listings Hint at Project Orion Being Multiplayer

  • CDPR is searching for a Senior Gameplay Programmer.
  • The job listing emphasized both single-player and multiplayer.

If Project Orion were to have co-op gameplay, then the multiplayer-focused features that have been confirmed for the Switch 2 are bound to be a great way to experience the sequel. Rumors about Project Orion being multiplayer have been circulating for a while now, and job listings have simply been adding fuel to the fire.

The Switch 2's Confirmed Multiplayer Features

  • The mysterious C button on the Joy-Cons was recently revealed to be GameChat.
  • Players can also screen share with friends, even if they aren't playing the same game.
  • GameShare allows players to share a game with a friend or family member without the other person needing to own a copy of the same game.

Right now, there's no way to know if the Switch 2 can actually support Project Orion, but if it can, then Nintendo lovers who also happen to love multiplayer can get in on the dystopian action with their friends. The possibility of running through the streets of Night City alongside friends will likely be a big hit with players, regardless of whether one is playing on PC or console.

GameChat is only free for a limited time. After March 2026, Switch 2 players will need a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The Wait for Project Orion Hopefully Won't Be Too Long

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced back in 2012 but didn't get released until eight years later. Project Orion hopefully won't have the same lengthy development cycle, but only time will tell. There are some seriously high hopes for Project Orion, and it will be exciting if those expectations can be exceeded.

It may be a while before gamers are given deeper insight into Project Orion, but until then, the game is a good subject for speculation. Thankfully, there is plenty to experience in Cyberpunk 2077 to hold gamers over.
