Putting its flaws aside, which are becoming less of an issue thanks to significant updates, Cyberpunk 2077 is a fantastically realized open-world experience, with a gripping narrative and a gorgeous setting that feels lived in. Given its enormity and the fact that it stars Keanu Reeves, it's not surprising that it's one of the most expensive video games ever made. However, it is a solitary playthrough, even with all the NPCs, but now a new mod has been released which might make it feel less lonely.
Created and uploaded by a user called Scissors, "Drone Companions" is a fan-made add-on for Cyberpunk 2077 that, as the name suggests, allows players to have a non-human associate to keep them company. It works by implementing a new operating system called a TechDeck, which then allows for the crafting of a series of drones that will follow the player around and even fight for them. A video demonstrates the user creating a few androids, which then begin to charge forward once a fight breaks out. It's also possible for the companions to enter and exit vehicles and engage in shoot-outs while on the road.
Given that Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't have a multiplayer mode, at least not yet, this is likely the closest thing that fans can get to playing with others in Night City. There have been talks about CD Projekt Red adding multiplayer to the game and, in fact, it was supposed to be part of the initial launch, but there's been no sign of it since. No one really knows when the feature will be added, but hopefully multiplayer is something that's planned for launch soon. For now, "Drone Companions" is a neat alternative.
A game of this caliber is already pretty expansive as it is, but the modding community is consistently putting out additional content or general tweaks. Most recently, someone made a mod for Cybperunk 2077 that adds support for AMD's FSR 2.0 upscaling. There's also been one that implements flying cars, one that reinstates the visuals that were shown off at E3 2018, and so many more.
Cyberpunk 2077 may have had one of the most disastrous launches in recent gaming history, but many are prepared to forgive, even if they can't quite forget just yet. The enormous patch that rolled out earlier this year has certainly made a ton of improvements, and a lot of players have finally been able to get the full game experience and appreciate the work that CDPR has put into it, especially post-release.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
