A Cyberpunk 2077 player has shared an Easter egg referencing The Matrix that many players may not have found on an average playthrough. Unlike some Easter eggs in the game, this one is tucked away in a fairly isolated location that requires a bit of work to get to.
With Cyberpunk 2077 featuring Keanu Reeves, the star of The Matrix franchise, it makes plenty of sense to find references to the films within the game. Another reference to the movie can be found more readily in Cyberpunk 2077. Eagle-eyed players noticed that a commercial in Cyberpunk 2077 references The Matrix, recreating the iconic scene of Neo and Trinity preparing to rescue Morpheus by first procuring "guns, lots of guns."
Cyberpunk 2077's Unusual Game Awards 2023 Nomination Explained
Cyberpunk 2077's nomination for Best Ongoing Game may confuse some fans, as the game was released back in 2020 and isn't a live-service title.
Cyberpunk 2077 player Cerber_4_25 shared a detailed video explaining how they found this Easter egg, though they didn't initially recognize it as being a reference to The Matrix. While exploring around Dogtown, the player noticed an interesting-looking tunnel that they wondered if they could access. After some careful parkour maneuvers and utilizing Air Dash, they make their way through an open window into the tunnel. Most of the area is empty, but after they turn a corner near the end, an unmistakeable scene to fans of The Matrix appears: two armed chairs set in front of a CRT-style television.
The Cyberpunk 2077 area in question is surely a reference to The Matrix, when Morpheus explains to Neo what's happened in the real world and gives him the opportunity to escape The Matrix and join their resistance group. While The Matrix version took place in a void, there's no mistaking the chairs and television. Morpheus isn't here, but there's even a table with a pair of pills on it, referring to Neo's choice between the red and blue pills.
Although the player had previously watched The Matrix, they didn't notice the resemblance until other players pointed it out, and were simply curious as to what it could mean. Cyberpunk 2077 has plenty of Easter eggs, so it's not all too surprising to find another reference to an iconic moment of the original Matrix film. There's a small bit of loot for players to find here as well, serving as a reward for any player who decides to explore and find the developers' reference.
Even looking beyond Johnny Silverhand, it makes sense for Cyberpunk 2077 to reference a film as iconic as The Matrix, as it played a big role in bringing the cyberpunk genre to more mainsteam recognition. The game also references other iconic cyberpunk properties like Ghost in the Shell and Akira, legendary anime that helped to propel cyberpunk and even inspired The Matrix film.
