Summary

  • Cyberpunk 2077's redemption arc includes the 2.02 update and Phantom Liberty DLC, which overhauled many game systems.
  • The Addicted to Chaos quest in Phantom Liberty gives players a unique shotgun that's particularly good at wreaking havoc.
  • Glitches in the quest, such as sequence breaking and auto-completion, add to the chaotic nature of Addicted to Chaos.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of gaming's more exciting redemption arcs. After a disastrous launch in December 2020, CD Projekt Red worked hard to improve the game and fix its many issues, though it's debatable if this justifies winning Best Ongoing Game at the 2023 Game Awards. This included the massive 2.0 update, which CDPR released alongside the Phantom Liberty DLC and overhauled many of the game's systems.

Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion gave players a new region of Night City to explore and lots of new Gigs and Side Jobs to complete. This includes a short side quest called Addicted to Chaos, the title of which is entirely appropriate. However, only some of the quest's chaos was intended by CDPR.

Phantom Liberty's Addicted to Chaos Quest

On its own, Phantom Liberty's Addicted to Chaos is pretty straightforward. Assuming players spared Leon Rinder during Gig: The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman, he will send them the coordinates to his stash. The quest marker will lead the player to a garage near Dogtown's abandoned Terra Cognita technological park. Rinder will text V the password, "1975," allowing players to access his computer and the Dezerter shotgun.

Like many of Cyberpunk 2077's quests, Addicted to Chaos is named after a song. Specifically, Addicted to Chaos is the third track of Megadeth's 1994 Youthanasia album .

The Dezerter

The Dezerter is a double-barreled shotgun with a 10% chance to inflict burn on targets, a 25% bonus to Armor Penetration, and a 400% higher chance to dismember its target. However, this comes at the cost of 33% less damage and a 20% longer reload time. Meanwhile, the Dezerter's Iconic modifier sets the player on fire for 10 seconds if they kill an enemy while at 40% health or lower. The fire deals 2% of V's maximum health as damage every half second but also increases movement speed by 20% and damage mitigation chance by 10%.

Dezerter is another music reference, sharing its name with a Polish punk band.

These modifiers encourage Phantom Liberty players to favor an aggressive, highly mobile playstyle. It also makes the quest's name very appropriate. After all, it's hard to think of many things that are more chaotic than a half-dead mercenary evaporating someone's limbs with a double-barred shotgun while on fire.

Unlocking Cyberpunk 2077's Addicted to Chaos

Of course, not every Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty player will get the Addicted to Chaos Side Job. First, players must ensure Leon Rinder survives The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman. Available from Mr. Hands in Pacifica, the Gig tasks players with finding and eliminating a former Barghest member who killed eight civilians.

Deciding Rinder's Fate

After tracking Rinder down in an abandoned motel, players have four options for dealing with him. The first is to do what V was hired to do by killing the rogue mercenary and retrieving his dog tags as proof. Alternatively, they can just take the dog tags and leave him alive.

Meanwhile, players who talk to Rinder can either spare him in exchange for the stash coordinates or convince him to contact Regina to arrange treatment for his cyberpsychosis. Either of these options will unlock Addicted to Chaos as a Side Job, though players who sent him to Regina must wait a few in-game days.

The Chaos of Addicted to Chaos

However, all of that is just the quest working as intended. Addicted to Chaos truly earns its name from the multiple glitches. Since the password is always the same, players who already knew the password could open the garage before meeting Rinder. However, sequence breaking in this way prevents players from completing the objective and softlocks the quest. Cyberpunk 2077's 2.02 update fixed this by making the door unpowered until players started The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman.

Another bug causes Addicted to Chaos to complete itself when players get too close to the garage. This can even happen if they haven't started the quest yet. This disables the keypad, preventing the player from entering the code. Fortunately, Cyberpunk 2077 players can quickhack the door once it's powered up, allowing players to access the cache without entering the password. Still, it's funny how a quest called Addicted to Chaos attracts problems.
