Cyberpunk 2077 is in an interesting position nearly five years after its tumultuous launch. New life is persistently breathed into the game’s lungs, whether that’s via Cyberpunk 2077’s release on Switch 2 or its upcoming Update 2.3, stirring a ton of anticipation for what the future may have in store.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 was originally intended to launch on June 26, with CD Projekt Red deciding last-minute to delay it until it reaches “a similar scope to Update 2.2.” In the meantime, while players seemingly have a moment to consider what 2.3 might entail, a fresh playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 could be due.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.3’s Release Date is a Blessing and a Curse

Cyberpunk 2077's highly anticipated 2.3 update is set to release soon, but its chosen date is both beneficial and detrimental to the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 Could Warrant a Full Playthrough Experience

If a comparable catalog of custom cosmetic potential is made available in 2.3, players might get the most out of the upcoming update if they begin a new playthrough so that they can see all of these additions in real-time, as opposed to loading an old save file where there might not be anything left to achieve. Merely having access to a bunch of new cosmetic options would surely be great in its own right, but being able to potentially explore those options throughout the course of a whole playthrough could be even more gratifying for anyone indulging in role-playing purposes.

Plus, if something as significant as Johnny’s ride-alongs is added in 2.3, players might want as many hours as possible to be able to explore such dialogue and interactions to their extremities, especially if there was new dialogue for unique moments in story progression.

But, because CD Projekt Red has been tight-lipped on what Update 2.3 will feature, it’s ultimately unknown what to expect. The 2.2 comparison seems like a gracious attempt to not have anyone’s hopes dashed or expectations blown wildly out of proportion, and yet 2.3 is easily one of the most exciting updates Cyberpunk 2077 will have had in a long while due to its purposeful radio silence. Until actual patch notes are doled out, though, it might be in players’ best interests to have their finger on the trigger of a new playthrough prepared so that they can embrace whatever content arrives in Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.3.

In any case, a new playthrough may be just what the ripperdoc ordered as Cyberpunk 2077 still doesn’t have a NG+ option and seemingly never will. Plus, a new playthrough would be twice as satisfying for anyone eagerly awaiting 2.3, rather than briefly dipping into an old playthrough to take a peek at new update additions before putting the game down again.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.2 May Paint a Picture of What to Expect from 2.3

There are several presumptions that can be made about 2.3 based on CD Projekt Red stating that the update is aiming for a 2.2 scope. First, much of what 2.2 added to Cyberpunk 2077 was cosmetic: players had new “makeup options, cosmetic cyberware, tattoos, and much more,” could “change the color of any high-end cars in [their] collection,” and an “enhanced Photo Mode” with players able to hang photos in V’s apartments.

However, 2.2’s biggest content addition was arguably having Cyberpunk 2077’s Johnny Silverhand accompany players in their vehicles with “more of his sharp insights,” which encourages traveling via a car and not a motorcycle, as well as driving from a first-person perspective so that players can pan across and see Johnny sitting in the passenger seat. Either way, such a considerable update would benefit from players starting anew, and 2.3 being in that ballpark suggests the same.
