CK3 AGOT is a total conversion mod for Crusader Kings 3, which brings the world of Game of Thrones and the A Song of Ice and Fire books to life. With the highly anticipated dragon update for CK3 AGOT finally arriving, players can now hatch, tame, and hopefully not fall off when they eventually ride a dragon for the first time.

For players wondering how to become a Dragonrider in CK3 AGOT, the answer is far from a simple one as there are many ways of achieving this dream. For some characters, it is a matter of birthright, whereas others have a long and arduous journey ahead of them to take to the skies. The easiest way is to simply play as an existing Dragonrider like King Jaehaerys Targaryen.

The Dragonrider Trait In CK3 AGOT

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Dragonrider Trait

When a character successfully tames a dragon, they will gain the Dragonrider Trait, which grants a whole host of bonuses. Additional bonuses can be earned by leveling up this Trait through Dragon Training and the Dragon Bond level. Characters can only ever be bonded to one dragon, even if their first dragon dies. Dragons, on the other hand, might accept other riders in the future.

Create A Custom Character With The Dragonrider Trait & Design A Dragon In CK3 AGOT

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Custom Character & Custom Dragon

The easiest way to become a Dragonrider in CK3 AGOT, other than starting as someone like Daemon Targaryen who already rides Caraxes, is to make a custom character and select the Dragonrider Trait. Once the game starts, an event will pop up, allowing players to choose an egg or a dragon of a certain age. All dragons, including the young one, can be ridden immediately. Older dragons are typically more powerful, at the cost of not having as long left to live.

Players will then be given the option to name their dragon and change the Traits of their dragon for better or worse. They are also able to alter the appearance of their dragon, and the possibilities go well beyond simple color alterations. A dragon's appearance can be changed at any point during a game, by going to their character portrait and opening the Dragon Customizer.

With their custom dragon chosen, there is nothing else to do but take to the skies via a decision on the right-hand side of the screen.

How To Hatch A Dragon Egg & Bond With It To Become A Dragonrider In CK3 AGOT

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Hatched Dragon Tame Option

There are a few ways to hatch dragon eggs in CK3 AGOT. However, for the purposes of eventually riding a hatched dragon, players will want to right-click on themselves for the Cradle Egg option. Eggs sent to other characters will end up bonded to them, and dragons hatched in a Dragonpit can be claimed by anyone who has access. Either way, cradled eggs can take a few years to hatch, or they may turn to stone.

Crusader Kings 3: 27 Tips For Newcomers To Grand Strategy Games

Crusader Kings 3 can be an intimidating title for newcomers. Here are some things to know for gamers who don't usually play grand strategy games.

If a player successfully hatches a cradled egg, they will be permanently bonded to the dragon. When the dragon reaches a Dragon Size of 30, which may take around 10 years, players will then be able to attempt to tame it. To do so, right-click on the dragon and select Tame Dragon. Success here, like anything to do with these dangerous creatures, is not guaranteed, but fairly likely for a bonded dragon.

The first Dynasty Legacy, in the Dragonlords branch, 'Cradle to Grave', gives bonuses to bonded cradle dragons.

Hatching & Taming A Dragon After They Have Died Out

Players starting out in a bookmark after dragons have died out will need to partake in a highly dangerous Dragon Egg Hatching activity. Success is unlikely in most cases, but if a dragon hatches, it will instantly bond to the player's character. Once it reaches 30 Dragon Size, it can be tamed.

King Aegon V Targaryen and Maelys 'the Monstrous' Blackfyre both start with dragon eggs in the 258 AC bookmark titled The War of the Ninepenny Kings. They each have special events tied to hatching their eggs.

If players don't have an egg available, then the only way to claim a dragon is to attempt to tame one. To find dragons, players can press C to bring up the character search function, and then search using the Dragon Trait. Alternatively, they can click on Decisions on the right, then scroll down to Manage Realm Affairs, and select Dragons.

Crusader Kings 3: Pro Tips To Level Up Your Rule

Some pro tips exist for grand strategy fans to have the most fun with their Crusader Kings 3 experience.

In the Manage Realm Affairs, players will be able to look at Wild Dragons, Owned Dragons, and Tamed Dragons separately.

  • Wild Dragons: Not owned by any ruler and roam free, often making lairs. They can be captured, bonded with, and tamed at great peril.
  • Owned Dragons: Belong to a ruler with a Dragonpit, but not yet claimed by a rider.
  • Tamed Dragons: Already tamed by a Dragonrider. They cannot be interacted with until their rider dies.

Players will need access to a Dragonpit to bond or tame Owned Dragons. Request access from the owner of the pit.

Use Bond Scheme First For Any Chance Of Success

If players want any chance of taming a dragon and want to avoid dying, they should conduct a Bond With Dragon scheme first. This can be done by right-clicking on an available dragon, Wild or Owned. The scheme has a success chance, which is influenced by the dragon's Traits and personality.

Wild Dragons are much harder to bond with and tame than Owned Dragons.

Having some semblance of Dragonblood is also a must. This essentially means that the character must have at least one ancestor in the last three generations who was a Dragonrider. It also helps if the character and the dragon have similar personalities. Some of Crusader Kings 3's best Personality Traits also provide a direct bonus, such as the Diligent Trait.

Attempting To Tame A Dragon

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Tame Wild Dragon Attempt

Once characters have bonded with a dragon, or they are otherwise feeling overconfident, they can attempt to tame a Wild or Owned dragon. To do so, once again right-click on the dragon's character portrait, and select Tame Dragon.

Upon doing so, players will see the odds of death, burning, wounding, and their potential success. They are also given a very understandable option to back out when face to face with the dragon. If successful, the character will become a fully-fledged Dragonrider. If not, then perhaps their orphaned heir may fare better in the future.
