Dragons have finally arrived in Crusader Kings 3's popular Game of Thrones mod, CK3 AGOT, and there's a lot to dive into. While the mod's developers could have simply added dragons as companions or aides in war, they have instead gone above and beyond, representing every aspect of dragons, their eggs, and their riders.

For fans interested in experiencing the CK3 AGOT mod for Crusader Kings 3, these are the ideal rulers to start with.

Dragons in CK3 AGOT are living, fire-breathing creatures with their own personalities and nuances. They hatch from eggs, and over time can grow to monstrous sizes. Certain characters with the right blood can bond with dragons to become dragonriders, but this can be a risky business. Fully grown dragons are naturally great for war, but players will find that the special events surrounding dragons are arguably even more interesting. To see living dragons and eggs, use the Manage Realm Affairs decision on the right and select the dragons option.

1 Who Can Ride Dragons?

Members Of Dragonriding Houses & 3 Generations Of Their Descendents Can Ride Dragons

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Daemon Targaryen & Caraxes

To hatch, tame, and eventually ride a dragon, a character must have Dragon Blood. Members of House Targaryen or any future Dragonriding Houses have 100% Dragon Blood, and a fraction of this blood can be passed down through three generations. If a third-generation character claims a dragon, their Dragon Blood will jump up from 12.5% to 100%. Marrying characters with Dragon Blood will also help with this. Another option is to turn off this requirement in the game rules.

The best way to become bonded to a dragon is by cradling it as an egg. To claim living dragons is a much more risky decision, although it is somewhat easier if the dragon is owned and safely kept in a Dragonpit. This can be done by finding the dragon's character portrait and right-clicking on it for options. It should also be noted that characters bonded to a dragon will be unable to claim another dragon, even after their dragon dies. Dragons, on the other hand, will possibly take on a new rider after the death of a previous one.

2 Dragon Traits

Each Dragon Is A Unique Character That Develops Over Time

Dragons in CK3 AGOT are fully fleshed-out characters, and as such, have their own Traits. Similar to CK3's standard Personality Traits, dragons develop Traits during their early years. A dragon can be friendly, accepting of humans, skittish in combat, or it can instead be an impulsive and bloodthirsty monster with an insatiable appetite. It is possible to influence a hatchling's personality, especially for members of a Dragonriding House.

Like rulers, dragons also have Congenital Traits that are inherited. These can relate to the health and size of a dragon, its speed, fertility, and even majesty. All of these Traits and factors contribute to the five main stats of a dragon; Health, Size, Combat Effectiveness, Draconic Dread, and Temperament.

3 Dragon Eggs Can Be Hatched

This Is Much Harder To Do If Dragons Are Extinct

If dragons currently exist, such as in the 82 AC and 106 AC bookmarks, then hatching a dragon egg is a fairly simple process, at least for Targaryens who have access to many eggs. Every year, female dragons have a random chance to lay one or more eggs, and these can be given to one's self or family members to cradle. This is done by right-clicking on characters and selecting the option. Dragon eggs can also be hatched in a similar way by sending them to a Dragonpit. However, it can take a few years for an egg to hatch, and success is not guaranteed. An egg can instead turn to stone, becoming little more than a fancy ornament.

Crusader Kings 3: 27 Tips For Newcomers To Grand Strategy Games

Crusader Kings 3 can be an intimidating title for newcomers. Here are some things to know for gamers who don't usually play grand strategy games.

If dragons die out, or they have long been extinct in the current start date, then these stone eggs become very useful indeed. While it is incredibly difficult to bring about the return of dragons, it is possible. Players will first need to obtain dragonlore knowledge from around the world, and they will then choose a Knowledge Hatching or an Esoteric Hatching. The former makes use of maesters and other scholars, while the latter relies on warlocks, alchemists, and the like. As with any activity, players choose how much they would like to spend on their attempt, and then there will be many events and decisions to determine the success or cataclysmic failure of the hatching.

4 Dragonpits

Dragons Are Safer In Dragonpits & They Won't Go Wild If Their Rider Dies

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Dragonpit

Dragonpits are buildings where players keep their dragons safe from would-be dragon slayers or outsiders who wish to claim their own. This comes at a cost, however, as dragons won't grow to their full potential in an enclosed space. There are a few existing Dragonpits, such as the ones in King's Landing and on Dragonstone, but others can be built by dragonrider kings. Players can dictate who has access to their Dragonpit via the Crown Laws in the top right.

Another benefit of a Dragonpit is the retention of dragons after their rider dies, as otherwise they would be let loose in the wild. Dragon eggs can also be hatched or at least kept safe in these pits, and players will also gain access to a Head Dragonkeeper who provides many benefits, such as teaching dragonlore. To send an egg to the Dragonpit, locate the Head Dragonkeeper and right-click on them for the Send Egg to Dragonpit option.

5 What Can You Do With Dragons?

Dragons Can Be Used In War, Activities, & Much More

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Daemon Riding a Dragon

When it comes to what dragons can do in this Game of Thrones mod, there's thankfully quite a lot. Naturally, they are huge assets in war and can be ridden into battle to massively sway the odds. During a battle, random dragonriding events may be triggered, including duels against other dragons. They can also be used during sieges, but the damage will be permanent, and both dragon and rider will be under increased threat. Dragonriders can also conduct terror campaigns.

Outside of warfare, dragons can be ridden for fun and to increase the bond, but they can also be used as transport to reach activities, although this is at the cost of leaving others behind. Speaking of activities, they can even partake in hunts. Dragons can also be used in executions and trials by combat, as well as many random events such as draining land.

6 Create Your Own Dragon & Dragonrider

Customize The Size, Color, & Name Of A Dragon

Crusader Kings 3 CK3 AGOT Dragon Customizer

Players who love the sandbox capabilities and customization options of Crusader Kings 3 will be glad to know that they can not only make their own dragonrider but also design their very own dragon. By taking the Dragonrider Trait in character creation, a pop-up menu will appear upon starting the game that guides players through the dragon design process.

First of all, they will choose the age and size of their dragon, or if they prefer, they can select a custom egg to start with. The dragon can then be named, either from a list of default options or by coming up with one. To customize the appearance of a dragon, players can open the Dragon Customizer in the dragon's portrait. This is done similarly to opening up the barbershop to customize normal characters. Almost every aspect of a dragon's appearance can be changed, from their horns and color to the length of their neck and more.
