Summary

  • Nintendo Switch players may never see Coral Island due to recent layoffs at Humble Games, leaving the port in uncertainty.
  • Coral Island, originally funded on Kickstarter, was promised for Switch but has not materialized.

The Coral Island developers have recently announced that the Nintendo Switch port for the game may never happen due to the recent layoffs at Humble Games. Switch players were eagerly expecting the Coral Island port, which was originally announced in 2021.

Coral Island was released for Xbox X/S and PS5 in November 2023. Originally available in early access on Steam, the farming simulator was funded via Kickstarter in 2021. At the time of the Kickstarter campaign, Switch players were promised a port, but it did not materialize.

Ocean Caves of Coral Island can provide you with an infinite number of resources if you know how to farm them properly.

Coral Island developer Stairway Games recently explained the situation in an open letter to its community. According to the devs, the recent restructuring of Humble Games left the console versions of the farming sim in a state of uncertainty, as Humble Games was officially responsible for all publishing rights regarding consoles. While the team “shares the frustrations” of the player base regarding the Switch port, they simply cannot confirm that it will ever be released. Also, new updates for PS5 and Xbox may be affected by the situation, as the developers only have the ability to publish new updates on Steam. While no refunds were offered, Stairway Games promised to give Steam keys to all Switch backers immediately as a way to diminish the problem.

Coral Island's Nintendo Switch Port May Never Happen

The recent layoffs at Humble Games have been fairly controversial. Some laid-off employees have claimed that the company’s entire 36-person team was laid off and that Humble Games has effectively been shut down by its parent company, Ziff Davis. On the other hand, Ziff Davis claims the contrary, arguing that Humble Games is only “restructuring.”

Luckily, access to Coral Island on consoles seems unaffected by the situation for now, and the game is still being sold. Also, Coral Island is still available on Xbox Game Pass. The game was originally added to the platform during its launch last year, and it’s likely that it will continue until the expiration of its contract.

It’s sad to see an excellent Stardew Valley-like game such as Coral Island having these issues. However, the Steam version of the game will continue to be updated. In the announcement, Stairway Games revealed that the 1.1 update for the farming simulator game is nearing its release date, and it’s possible that the studio will continue to work on the title, considering the developer itself was not affected by the Humble Games layoffs.
