Set for release in Fall 2025, Rockstar Games has been radio silent since the surprise drop of the first, and so far only, trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, and their press release on the same day. Despite Rockstar keeping most of the information on features and gameplay close to the chest, fans and future players can expect most features from previous GTA games to return. As of this writing, these are the details that are confirmed to be a part of Grand Theft Auto 6.

In a press release shortly after the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 dropped, Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on both major console platforms, Sony's Playstation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X & S consoles, in 2025. The game is thought to come out sometime in the Fall of 2025.

Nothing has been confirmed by the developers about a PC platform release, but speculation suggests that it will come at a later date. This is similar to how Grand Theft Auto 5 was released, with the game launching on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013, then being re-released on Xbox One and PS4 a year later (2014), and then given a PC release in 2015.

All of the Grand Theft Auto games have taken place in fictionalized cities and states within Rockstar Games' version of the United States. However these cities and states are stand-ins for real-life locations, such as Los Santos, San Andreas being the fictionalized version of Los Angeles, California.

8 Things Grand Theft Auto 6 Should Avoid

Everyone is super excited about the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 but there are a handful of pitfalls Rocktar needs to avoid

With Grand Theft Auto 6, fans get to return to the state of Leonida, diving back into the neon, sun-soaked, and mean streets of Vice City and the surrounding areas for the first time since 2006. First seen in the original 1997 Grand Theft Auto, Vice City is based very much on the city of Miami, Florida, and is one of the very first of three locations ever seen in the Grand Theft Auto series, alongside Liberty City and San Andreas.

3 Characters

The Two Main Characters Of Grand Theft Auto 6

Rockstar releases Grand Theft Auto 6 Discord channel.

In the trailer, the lead female protagonist is called Lucia by an unnamed character in the opening shots, which show her in a prison jumpsuit. She is seen talking with someone who seems to be a prison employee, with their conversation revolving around why Lucia is in prison. Lucia responds with "Bad luck, I guess."

The other main character, a man, who is believed to be Lucia's partner in crime, and potentially Lucia's lover, is currently officially unnamed, but is believed to be named Jason. Jason has only one line in the trailer, where Lucia asks Jason to trust that they will get through "this thing" together. Jason says that he trusts Lucia.

Setting The Stage Of Grand Theft Auto 6

Not much is known about the story of Grand Theft Auto 6. The trailer has plenty of sweeping landscape shots of the vibrant Vice City and surrounding areas, but that's not to say it doesn't have some story beats that are likely set at the beginning of the game.

13 Great Games To Play While Waiting For GTA 6

Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely still a long way off. Luckily, there are some games with a similar feeling that you can dive into while waiting!

The main character, Lucia, is seen in prison in the opening shots of the trailer. She is then, later on, seen entering a store with her male partner holding handguns with face coverings on, suggesting they are robbing the store. Then, together, Lucia and her partner are seen fleeing police in a car, with Lucia holding a fistful of dollar bills. It's unclear if the prison scene in the opening is before or after Lucia robs the store.

1 Immersion

Being Immersed In Vice City

With Grand Theft Auto 6 being a long time coming, Rockstar Games has had ample time to tweak details that will immerse players into the world of Vice City. In a quote from Rockstar Games' founder Sam Houser in the official press release, he says that Grand Theft Auto 6 "...continues our efforts to push the limits of what's possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences."

The trailer features plenty of in-game footage of characters doing things from dancing on yachts to confronting unseen characters with weapons. Most of these videos look like they were taken from a phone, with elements that suggest that these videos were posted to some kind of social media platform. These are likely in the same vein as TikTok or Instagram, with prompts such as "Follow" appearing on-screen, suggesting that social media and every-present phone cameras will play a large role in the game.
