Code Vein 2 features an affinity mechanic through which players can improve their bonds with the game's various characters. As players increase affinity with characters, they will gain access to new weapons, and there is even an achievement (Irreplaceable) awarded for achieving maximum affinity with a partner. Code Vein 2's affinity system is a bit obscure, though, and this guide is here to give players a sense of how it works.

There are two partners that do not have weapons to offer at high affinity: Jadwiga and Lavinia. As such, players need not put much effort towards deepening their bonds with those characters.

How to Increase Affinity With a Partner in Code Vein 2

The lack of any in-game affinity tracking makes it difficult to make definitive statements about exactly how affinity works in Code Vein 2. That said, experience and the efforts of the community suggest there are three primary ways to increase affinity with a partner:

Giving Gifts

Players can give gifts to the various partners in order to earn Trading Points and increase affinity. Players can give gifts to characters in MagMell once they have recruited them, and this Code Vein 2 gift guide details how to approach this system.

That said, it is believed that there is a cap to the amount of affinity that can be earned through giving gifts. While there is not currently a hard number attached to that cap, anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that it comes when around 200 Trading Points have been earned. Players may want to surpass that Training Point amount to make certain they have reached the affinity cap, though they should not need to go as far as 1,000+ Trading Points.

Boiled Eggs are a great way to earn Trading Points en masse, as they can be synthesized quite cheaply. The aforementioned gift guide details how to put Boiled Eggs to use, and players should be ready to make a lot of them.

Completing Requests

Completing the side quests offered by partner characters seems to increase affinity with them, and understandably so. Many of these requests are pursued in the Free Exploration Era after Timeline Shift Decisions have been completed. As such, players who are looking to raise affinity with partners should make sure to tackle all their optional content as it is made available.

Exploration & Combat

The final opportunities to increase affinity appear to come in the form of exploration and combat. Indeed, exploring the map, opening chests, collecting items, and defeating enemies all seem to improve your bond with the character that is set as your partner when those activities are pursued. Thus, if you have gifted a partner several hundred Boiled Eggs but still cannot see their unique weapon in their gift shop, you should set them as your partner and spend some time riding around the map, picking up items, and dispatching enemies.

As a reminder, Jadwiga and Lavinia do not have high-affinity weapons to offer, which means that you should not spend time trying to unlock one in their gift shops.

Achieving Maximum Affinity with a Partner in Code Vein 2 (Irreplaceable)

As mentioned, there is a trophy associated with hitting maximum affinity with a partner. The best way to do this is to select a character that you will focus on very early in the game (like Lou or Lyle) and have them set as your partner any time that it is possible to do so. This approach maximizes the affinity the chosen partner earns from exploration and combat during a playthrough, and players that thoroughly explore the map, and address all optional content, should be able to pop the Irreplaceable trophy by gifting the partner lots of Boiled Eggs near the end of the game.

If the trophy is not awarded, it is likely that you need to spend more time exploring and fighting enemies with the character set as your partner. Additionally, while the appearance of the unique weapon in a character's gift shop does indicate that affinity is on the rise, it does not mean that the achievement is just about to pop.

One final thing to mention is that affinity seems to carry over to NG+ playthroughs. As such, if you have not earned the Irreplaceable achievement after gifting a ton of Boiled Eggs to a character, and you have completed all of their requests and spent a lot of time exploring with them, you may want to jump into NG+ and continue with the aforementioned tactics for increasing affinity. This should ultimately lead to the acquisition of the achievement, and it can feel less hopeless than running around a fully explored map without any real sense of how close your affinity is to maximum.
