Hero Cards are a special unit type in Clash Royale, with powerful abilities that can change the tide of any match when used correctly and with a proper deck. Unlocking Hero Cards can be a bit confusing for players who are unfamiliar with how the system works.

This guide covers all information about Hero Cards in Clash Royale, including how to get them, how to place them in decks, and how to use them in battles. Here’s the breakdown.

How to Unlock Heroes in Clash Royale

In Clash Royale, a random Hero Card can be summoned using 200 Hero Fragments, a unique currency that can only be obtained from a special type of chest called a Hero Box. Every Hero Box contains a random amount of Hero Fragments.

Hero Boxes can be obtained from special events and the Pass Royale (Battle Pass). Once you have gathered 200 Hero Fragments, you will be prompted to “Summon a Hero” on-screen. Click on the prompt, and a Hero will be summoned to your account. You cannot select which Hero you get; it is completely random.

If you summon a duplicate Hero, you will be refunded a small amount of Hero Fragments and some Cards for the Hero’s base as compensation.

Similar to Magic Lucky Chests, Hero Boxes use the star rarity system. The more stars a Hero Box has when it is opened, the higher the number of Hero Fragments you will obtain from it.

Additionally, Hero Boxes advance in tiers as players advance through the Trophy Road. A Hero Box opened when the player is at Arena 15 will have fewer Hero Fragments than one that is opened when they are at Arena 20, provided the star rarity is the same.

The total accumulated Hero Fragments can be viewed in the Collection tab in the Card Forms section.

How to Use Hero Cards in Clash Royale

To use Heroes, you will need to place them in your deck’s Hero Slot. Hero Slots are indicated by a yellow border in the deck maker window. The first Hero Slot unlocks when players reach Arena 15 (5000 Trophies) on Trophy Road, and a second Hero Slot will become available when you reach Arena 20 (10,000 Trophies).

Once a Hero Card is placed in your deck (and it has been unlocked), you will see that the artwork on the Card changes accordingly.

When a Hero is placed in the arena during a match, its Hero form will immediately be summoned. Unlike Evolution activation, Heroes do not require you to use a normal version of that card a certain number of times before it can be used. To use a Hero’s special ability, press the ability icon on-screen to consume the required Elixir and trigger the ability.

Clash Royale Heroes Explained

Hero Slots are shared between Heroes and Champions. This means if you want to use two Champions in a single deck, you cannot use any Hero Card. And if you want to place two Heroes in your deck, you will not be able to use any Champions. Naturally, this also means that you can use one Hero and one Champion in the same deck.

Hero Cards share the same level as their base type and do not need to be leveled up independently. If you have a level 16 Giant and summon a Hero Giant using 200 Hero Fragments, the Hero Giant will also be level 16 when placed in a deck.

If a Hero version of a Card is in use, its Evolution version will be unavailable during the match, even if players have the card’s Evolution unlocked. So if you have a Knight and place it in the Hero Slot in your deck, you will not be able to use its Evolution, even if you have Evo Knight unlocked.
