Every character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has their own gimmicks and playstyle. With the vast variety of Pictos and Luminas, players can unleash their creativity and experiment with different setups. For instance, every expeditioner has both supportive and offensive abilities, meaning players can use them for both roles according to their preference.
For Maelle, her gimmick lies in her multiple Stances. In Offensive Stance, she deals more damage but also takes more damage. In Defensive Stance, she takes less damage and gains 1 AP when performing a Parry or a Dodge. Meanwhile, in Virtouse Stance, she deals more damage without any penalty. Therefore, it's important to ensure Maelle is in her Virtouse Stance before unleashing a damage-dealing skill like
Percee. In the early game, there's one easy method to ensure the battle starts with Maelle in Virtouse Stance. This can be done if players know how to get Medalum in Expedition 33.
How To Get Medalum In Expedition 33
There are two ways to get
Medalum in Expedition 33:
- Win against "The Stranger" as Maelle in the Gestral Village's Arena (in the main quest).
- Beat Golgra in a duel with Maelle.
There are a lot of instances where players duel Golgra. At the Chief's House in Gestral Village, at the Sacred River (An expeditioner's friendship quest), and at the Dark Gestral Arena. Fighting Golgra at the Chief's House is the go-to to initiate a duel, but just remember that she has a massive HP pool and powerful hits, so it won't be easy to get Medalum through a duel in the early game.
Since the second method of obtaining
Medalum is far harder, it's highly recommended to use Maelle in the Gestral Village's Arena Tournament. The weapons rewarded if you use Lune or Gustave are both easy to get from other sources.

Medalum is one of the best weapons for Maelle in Expedition 33. Maelle has a high DPS when she's in her Virtouse Stance, not only because the Stance gives a damage bonus, but also because her early damage-dealing skills are generally affected by Virtouse Stance. Normally, Maelle starts the battle Stanceless. The fastest way to enter Virtouse Stance is by burning the enemy, then using
Swift Stride.
Medalum's instant Virtouse Stance is the easiest way to reach 9999 damage, even in the early game. This is useful for beating tough enemies and completing challenges such as Ono Puncho's 9999 damage challenge in Expedition 33. Of course, later on, this weapon can help Maelle exceed the 9999 damage, too.
In the early game, here's how players would want to use Medalum in Expedition 33:
-
Set up the field for Maelle's
Percee
to deal the most damage.
- Maelle will enter Defensive Stance.
-
If the enemy is burning, use
Swift Stride
to re-enter Virtouse Stance. If no one can apply burn, either use
Offensive Switch
>
Spark
>
Swift Stride, or skip the
Offensive Switch
and simply use
Spark.
-
Due to
Medalum
being able to double the burn applied on enemies, using
Offensive Switch
before
Spark
is a good idea in the long run, especially since the skill also renders the enemy Defenceless.
In the late game, players can use Medalum to create a burn team comp in Expedition 33.
