Civilization 7 may seem like it's still a long ways away, but it's actually closer than ever. There's certainly a lot of anticipation in the air, considering this will be the first new mainline title in several years. Fans looking out for news about Civilization 7 can breathe a sigh of relief, because a major update will be coming later this month.

To say Civilization fans are a little starved for content may be an understatement. Civilization 6 was released all the way back in 2016, which may as well be ancient history in the world of gaming news. Of course, Civilization 6 was beloved by many during this long period, but fans of the series have still been awaiting its next entry with bated breath.

Major Civilization 7 Announcement Coming August 20

What's Known So Far About Civilization 7

Civilization 7 was first revealed earlier this year during Summer Game Fest, and subsequently announced for release in 2025. The teaser trailer was certainly something to write home about, but left fans without much official information to go off of. Since developers have been largely silent ever since, the following radio silence has only caused speculation to grow that much louder.

The teaser trailer was just over one minute long, and certainly very cryptic in nature. Likewise, it's hard to call anything shown so far an official reveal, as there was no gameplay included. With that being said, there are still plenty of sections within the trailer that seem to drop some major hints. Of course, plenty of attention has focused on the potential leaders and civilizations that the teaser may have given a nod.

Thankfully, fans haven't been left entirely in the dark. In fact, their big payday is finally around the corner. Within the same breath that it was first revealed, developers made another bombshell announcement. On August 20, developers will be rolling out Civilization 7's first official gameplay trailer during Gamescom.

What to Expect from Civilization 7's Gameplay Trailer

The upcoming gameplay trailer is by far the largest announcement made about Civilization 7 since its reveal. The August showcase is no doubt going to blow this window wide open, either confirming or denying a number of fan suspicions. Although many fans are excited at the prospect of Civilization getting another entry in the first place, the gameplay showcase is where interest will really be drawn.

Leaders, eras, and civilizations are always going to be at the front of the conversation when it comes to a Civilization showcase. Although they're the defining framework of the series, they're certainly not the be all end all. While the August showcase will undoubtedly include at least a few major reveals in this regard, Civilization 7 should go all in on game mechanics in a broader sense.

While some fans' interest may hinge on whether they can play as their favorite civilization or not, there's a much larger question hanging over the head of Civilization 7. Civilization 6 has been a satisfying game for nearly eight years now, and its successor will naturally have to prove the reason for its release. Developers need to show how the upcoming game will surpass its predecessor, and the August showcase is the perfect chance to show off the core mechanics that could accomplish that.

Civilization 7 being a graphical improvement on the previous game is definitely expected. Likewise, revealing civilizations and the leaders that guide them will do a lot to emphasize the aesthetic difference between the two games. However, developers and fans alike know that the gameplay is always going to be of the utmost importance. First impressions are doubly important, and with release slowly getting closer, this gameplay trailer will hopefully end more than one debate among Civilization fans.
