It is almost time for the April’s full lineup of free PlayStation Plus games to be announced, and some people think that Civilization 6 will be joining the already confirmed Oddworld: Soulstorm for PS5. However, based on a language barrier, this may not be the case.
Civilization 6 originally released in 2016 for the PS4 and other platforms. The latest entry in the long-running turn-based strategy franchise still regularly receives DLC updates, with the most recent introducing the ability to grow a Portuguese civilization led by Joao III. The update also introduced the series' first Zombie Defense mode, in which zombie units can spawn where normal units are killed and create more zombies by infecting other enemy units.
Users with Japanese PlayStation accounts spotted that Civilization 6 is free for PlayStation Plus subscribers, leading some to think that it means that it was an accidental early posting for April's free PS Plus games. However, Civilization 6 is actually having a free-to-play weekend until March 29 at 9:00 a.m. PT. Unlike other free-to-play weekends like Watch Dogs Legion’s current free weekend, Civ 6 actually requires users to be PS Plus subscribers. This oddity is what might have led to the confusion for PlayStation users who cannot read Japanese.
PlayStation fans still don’t know what to expect for PlayStation Plus in April other than Oddworld: Soulstorm. Soulstorm was confirmed for PS Plus during PlayStation’s February State of Play, set to be added on its April 6 release date. Oddworld: Soulstorm serves as a remake of 1998’s Abe’s Exodus and a direct sequel to New ‘n’ Tasty, which is a remake of the first game in the series.
PlayStation has been on a roll so far in 2021 with its free games for PS Plus, with February seeing the PS5 version of the critically acclaimed Control: Ultimate Edition and March getting Final Fantasy 7 Remake. PlayStation is also doling out free games outside of its PS Plus subscription with its Play At Home initiative, which gives out popular games like Ratchet and Clank and Horizon Zero Dawn for free in order to encourage them to stay home during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If PlayStation wants to keep its momentum going, perhaps another big PS4 title could be coming to PS Plus in April. This may not be Civilization 6, but if it is some fans will certainly be excited.
Civilization 6 is available now for Linux, Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
