One of the co-creators of the classic SNES RPG Chrono Trigger, Yuji Horii, shared that he is "beginning to contemplate" a remake after seeing how many fan requests the game had received. Horii's statement came after rumors of a Chrono Trigger remake circulated on social media following a convention in Naples that he was at.

Originally released on the SNES in 1995, Chrono Trigger was designed by the "Dream Team" of Horii, Final Fantasy series producer and creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, and the late Dragon Ball manga author Akira Toriyama. Chrono Trigger is a time-traveling adventure that sees characters like Crono, Marle, and Lucca explore different historical periods in a desperate quest to avert a world-ending calamity. Chrono Trigger was praised for its turn-based battle system, multiple endings, and iconic soundtrack composed primarily by Yasunori Mitsuda, with contributions from Noriko Matsueda and Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Although recent rumors of a Chrono Trigger remake have since been attributed to a translation mix-up, one of the game's main creators reignited fans' hopes. As reported by the Spanish media site GameReactor and translated by the r/GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, Chrono Trigger co-creator Yuji Horii said he was "beginning to contemplate" a Chrono Trigger remake following the success of HD-2D-styled projects that Square Enix has done of beloved games, such as Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Horii's comments came following his appearance at a convention in Naples, and he clarified that his words about a potential Chrono Trigger remake were lost in translation.

Chrono Trigger Co-Creator Is Starting To Consider A Remake Following Fan Requests

However, Horii said he is open to the idea after hearing numerous fan requests about the project, particularly since 2025 marked 30 years since the game's original launch on the SNES. Square Enix has not officially confirmed if a Chrono Trigger remake is being developed. As the main creator of the popular Dragon Quest series, Horii will also oversee some upcoming releases. Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake will launch sometime in 2025, and development continues on the upcoming Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. Only a few details about Dragon Quest 12 have been released by Horii and Square Enix, with future tidbits released "little by little" over time.

With Chrono Trigger observing its 30th anniversary throughout 2025, the iron remains hot for the beloved SNES JRPG to get a modern remake on various platforms. It remains to be seen if or when Square Enix will go forward with the popular fan request.
