Legendary Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda has announced his return as a guest composer for the DLC for 2023's award-winning Sea of Stars RPG. Sea of Stars was previously released in August 2023 and was praised for being one of the best RPGs of the year, capturing the spirit of Square Enix's 16-bit RPGs. The praise is well-warranted, as some of Sea of Stars' inspirations did include Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG, both being developed by Square in the late 1990s. Not only does Sea of Stars directly emulate these older JRPGs, but it also had one of Chrono Trigger's composers on the team, Yasunori Mitsuda.
Yasunori Mitsuda is a well-known video game composer, having worked with Square Enix on a number of the company's games and their various soundtracks. Aside from Chrono Trigger, he also worked with Nintendo on games like Kid Icarus Uprising, the Xenoblade Chronicles series, and Stella Glow. Yasunori Mitsuda was a guest composer for Sea of Stars, working alongside Eric W. Brown for the game's soundtrack, where Mitsuda wrote 10 different songs. Mitsuda will have a similar role in Sea of Stars' "Throes of the Watchmaker" post-launch DLC.
Mitsuda announced the news on his company's official website, stating that he will be a guest composer for Sea of Stars' Throes of the Watchmaker DLC. The extent of his involvement in the DLC isn't known at this time, but based on his previous work with Sabotage, he will write a few tracks for the game. Sabotage first announced Sea of Stars' Throes of the Watchmaker DLC in September, a month after the game's launch. Sabotage has been mostly quiet about the DLC's release date and progress, though fans were finally given an update about Sea of Stars' DLC earlier in August, which confirmed its Spring 2025 launch window.
Chrono Trigger Composer Yasunori Mitsuda Returning for Sea of Stars DLC
Other content currently in development is Sea of Stars' three-player co-op mode, Single Player+, where each player would be able to independently control one of the game's three party members while exploring a map, similar to Square Enix's Secret of Mana. Not much has been announced on that front either, other than that it is currently in development.
The Throes of the Watchmaker DLC is set to expand upon Sea of Stars' world, where it is focused on a carnival-themed clockwork area that the party explores, looking for a special pocket watch. The DLC will also feature a number of returning and new characters as well, including evil clones and a new party member called The Artificer. Fans are hoping the DLC will expand upon the Watchmaker and her role in the story of Sea of Stars.
