Chicago Med has always been at the top of its game, and the NBC procedural's latest episode doesn't disappoint. Similar to popular medical dramas such as The Pitt and Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Med explores the daily stressors that doctors, nurses, and other hospital employees deal with while also allowing fans to get to know each character well. Chicago Med season 10 has been particularly great as new characters like Dr. Nick Frost (Darren Barnet) have tried their best to integrate into the busy world of Gaffney Medical Center. But, of course, these transitions aren't always smooth, which makes for excellent TV.
Chicago Med season 10, episode 19 juggles a few compelling storylines, from Dr. Hannah Asher's (Jessy Schram) close bond with her sister to Sharon Goodwin's (S. Epatha Merkerson) personal and professional problems.
The Rookie: What Happened To Bishop?
Talia Bishop is a memorable character on The Rookie, the ABC drama starring Nathan Fillion, and fans want to know why she left.
What Happens At The End Of Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 19, "The Stories We Tell Ourselves"?
As Chicago Med season 10, episode 19 begins to wrap up, Paramedic Matt (Matthew Isler) gets ready to go into surgery to donate part of his liver to Clarissa, the skateboarding teenager whom he accidentally hit with his car. This emotional storyline feels like it could take place in the Max medical drama The Pitt, and it's another example of the complex medical cases that Chicago Med explores each week. While Matt feels good about his decision, his wife Samantha Sutton (Rachel Nicks) is nervous about their finances.
Next, Goodwin and Dennis Washington (John Earl Jelks) have a tough conversation when he learns that she told his daughter Alex (Brittany Bradford) that she's happy with their relationship because it's "fun." While she doesn't want Alex to think she was trying to replace her late mother, Dennis is worried about their future. This scene brings them closer together as they open up about how much they care about each other. It's also a great scene for fans who have been rooting for Goodwin for years and hoping she finds happiness.
Then, the most tragic storyline of Chicago Med season 10, episode 19 wraps up. A young child named Max learns his mom left him and that he's going to be moved into the foster care system. When he says his mom is a "superhero," Dr. Nick Frost says his mom is "on a very special crime-fighting mission." Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) and Frost have a serious conversation that proves Chicago Med stands out among other shows about doctors when Charles says they need to be realistic and help Max process what's going on. Later, Frost admits to Charles that he realizes his relationship with Ainsley Towne (Jessalyn Gilsig) was inappropriate, and that she was in the wrong. Frost confronts Ainsley and lets her know he doesn't want to be in a relationship with her now.
Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) tells Samantha that there was a complication with Matt's surgery and he might have had a stroke. Thankfully, by the end of the episode, Matt is okay.
Hannah Asher has a serious conversation with her older sister Lizzie (Erin Anderson), whose ovaries were removed, and shares she's considering becoming a surrogate for her. Hannah says she wants kids in the future, which adds another layer to this decision. The Rookie season 7 has also examined the path toward parenthood as Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) hope to adopt. Both popular series explore this tough topic with compassion.
Finally, Chicago Med season 10, episode 19 wraps up with the plotline about the nursing union's contract negotiations with the hospital. Maggie finds out the hospital wants to hire scabs in case the nurses go on strike, and she's upset with Goodwin. This storyline will likely continue until the Chicago Med season 10 finale.
Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 19 Dives Into Serious Storylines But Also Has A Light Tone
The latest episode of Chicago Med focuses on two dramatic and intense storylines: the nursing union's contract negotiations, Hannah Asher's consideration of becoming a surrogate. However, even though the doctors are navigating some tough times, the overall tone of the episode is light and uplifting, as usual.
The first plotline adds tension to Sharon Goodwin and Maggie Lockwood's (Marlyne Barrett) friendship as Goodwin represents the hospital and Maggie speaks on behalf of the nurses. The second adds some depth to Hannah's personal life and proves that, like the current season of Chicago P.D., Chicago Med has strong character development in each episode along with serious cases.
Allen MacDonald joined Chicago Med season 10 as showrunner, and when asked about the theme of the season in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MacDonald said "loneliness." Viewers have definitely seen this in the previous Chicago Med season 10 episodes, and it will be interesting to see what the end of the season is like. MacDonald explained:
"Combating loneliness. And that sounds a little depressing. But it is actually really hopeful in the way that we play it.... So, it’s loneliness, combating loneliness and learning to let other people in when you’ve been hurt. I won’t pretend that it is a theme that hasn’t been done before, but it’s always going to feel unique when you specify it to certain characters. And I think the way that the writing staff and I are planning to play that out is a very emotional and hopeful theme for the season."
