  1. Access the change your gamertag page on any browser.
  2. Sign in with the appropriate Microsoft account.
  3. Enter the new gamertag and click Check Availability.
  4. If the gamertag is available, the user will get a preview.
  5. Click Change Gamertag.

To change an Xbox gamertag on an Xbox, follow these steps instead:

  1. Press the Xbox button on the controller.
  2. Locate and select Profile & System.

  • Changing an Xbox gamertag will not change anything to the account.
  • If a gamertag is unavailable, consider adding a number or two. Since Xbox gamertags can be up to 12 characters, the sky is the limit.
  • Users can only change their Xbox gamertag once after creating an account. To change the gamertag again, the user must pay 800 Microsoft points or $9.99.
  • Xbox gamertags cannot contain special characters and must start with a letter.
