Summary

  • No confirmation of a Carry-On sequel, but a potential storyline involves Ethan's family facing a dangerous threat.
  • The potential sequel could combine a home invasion thriller and action, continuing the Christmas setting of the original.
  • The sequel could introduce a new intriguing villain connected to "The Traveler", building on Ethan's TSA agent and cop skills.

Taron Egerton plays a TSA agent named Ethan Kopel in the Netflix action thriller Carry-On, and I was so impressed by the movie that I think it deserves a sequel. Ethan dreams of becoming a cop, and as his girlfriend Nora (Sofia Carson) learns that she's pregnant, he gears up for a stressful Christmas season as a TSA agent. Like the best Netflix TV shows of 2024, Carry-On has compelling characters, a smart premise, and plenty of shocking scenes along the way.

There is no confirmation of a Carry-On sequel. But if there was one, I have an idea of what the sequel could be about, and how a second movie could build upon the strong foundation of the original film.

I Think This Storyline Should Happen In A Carry-On Sequel

Taron Egerton in Carry On

If there is a Carry-On sequel, I think it would make sense if Ethan's girlfriend/perhaps his now wife Nora and baby are in trouble. At the end of Carry-On, Ethan puts his police badge down on the security belt at the airport, proving that he has reached his dream of becoming a cop. I think it would be fun if Ethan and his family were celebrating Christmas and he received creepy text messages asking him to help with something dangerous. Ethan would be motivated to stop the security threat because of his love for his family and the life that he and his partner have created.

If this Carry-On sequel followed this plotline, it could be a combination of a home invasion thriller and a fast-paced action movie. The movie could take place either at Ethan and Nora's home or when they're on a fun vacation. Either setting would work well and create a seemingly fun, innocent atmosphere that quickly becomes scary. I think Carry-On should follow the popular Die Hard franchise and continue to tell stories set at Christmas. Now, instead of working the busy and chaotic TSA line during the winter holidays, Ethan thinks he has a day off with his family. But he realizes their lives are at all risk when a mysterious person contacts him.

The Carry-On sequel would follow the tradition of excellent Christmas action movies and should include a villain as interesting as Jason Bateman's The Traveler. Perhaps this figure finds someone or something from Ethan's past and blackmails him. Ethan could use all the skills he learned while working as a TSA agent and also build on his experience in the first movie. He would definitely be able to defeat this villain, although of course it would still be a terrifying time for him and his family. In order for this new threat to seem logical, the villain could be connected to The Traveler from the first movie.

Egerton thinks that Ethan and Nora are living the family life, so this storyline does seem possible. Egerton told Today:

"I think they are very settled. I think they probably would get married and do the whole 2.5 kids thing."

Egerton also addressed whether there could be a Carry-On 2 in the same interview. He mentioned that a second movie would have to have an impressive premise. He said:

"It's kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel. But yeah, why not."

What Did Fans And Critics Think Of Carry On?

Taron Egerton in Carry On

Carry-On had a fairly positive response, which is one reason why it would make sense to make a sequel. The movie has an 87% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, which is high. However, the Popcornmeter rating is much lower at 53%. There are several four-star reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but there are some one-star reviews as well.

What are some of Taron Egerton's other movie roles?

  • Robin Hood in Robin Hood (2018)
  • Elton John in Rocketman (2019)
  • voice of Johnny in Sing 2 (2021)
  • Henk Rogers in Tetris (2023)

Several publications gave Carry-On great reviews. Forbes compared it to Die Hard and The Hollywood Reporter called it "satisfyingly tense." Like many other 2024 action movies, it's a fun watch, and many have praised Jason Bateman's work as The Traveler. I think that as long as a Carry-On sequel had an equally gripping and fast-paced plot, it could be as popular as the original.
