Summary

  • Capcom is bringing Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 to Xbox One.
  • Capcom's decision to release the collections on Xbox is due to technical discussions with Microsoft.

Capcom has announced that Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 are coming to Xbox One, marking an interesting turn of events. The Capcom retro games collections were recently announced to be coming to PS4, Switch, and PC only.

Capcom unveiled the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics during a Nintendo event in June and weeks later followed up with the announcement of another compilation game, Capcom Fighting Collection 2, in August. On both occasions, the games were revealed for Sony, Nintendo, and PC platforms, leaving Xbox owners in an uncertain spot. The decision to ditch the Xbox port was especially puzzling as previous Marvel vs. Capcom games, such as 2017’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, had come out on Xbox as well.

Responding promptly to the concern of Xbox fans, Capcom announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 are finally headed to Xbox One as well. The change of mind comes after the Japanese developer held “technical discussions” with Xbox parent Microsoft. Capcom has given Capcom Fighting Collection 2 the same launch window for Xbox as for other platforms, which is 2025. However, the Marvel vs. Capcom compilation will release on Xbox at least some months after it releases on other systems. While its initial release date is September 12 for the digital version and November 22 for the physical version, the Xbox port is set to arrive sometime next year.

Capcom deciding to change its stance on the Xbox port of the two forthcoming compilation games is a major win for the Xbox community. The arrival of these titles will make sure players on Xbox also have access to classic Capcom fighting games like X-Men: Children of the Atom and Power Stone through the remastered ports. At the same time, this is also a big moment for Microsoft as its console is now confirmed to get a bunch of popular games belonging to a major IP. Capcom’s quick resolution of the matter highlights its commitment to fans regardless of which platform they play on.

Undoubtedly, the news from Capcom comes as a huge relief, not just for retro game fans on Xbox, but for all players on the platform in general. For a long time, Xbox has either missed out on major games entirely or has received them after a significant delay due to Sony's exclusivity deals with studios. The latest change of plans from the Street Fighter developer drifts away from this trend and brings a much-needed respite to Xbox owners. Whether this means more such compilations of beloved Capcom classics will follow suit whenever they release in the future is something that will be interesting to see.
