Avalanche Software and Warner Bros' open-world game Hogwarts Legacy is available for fans worldwide; however, it's only live for those that have spent the extra bucks on the Digital Deluxe or Collector's Edition. The former costs $79.99 on consoles and $69.99 on PC, while the latter goes for $289.99 on PC and $299.99 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Those with these special editions can jump into Hogwarts Legacy a full three days before its official release.

The problem is that people eligible for Hogwarts Legacy's early access period on PC seem to have trouble actually starting and playing the game on Steam, with there being no green play button available, even if the game is fully downloaded and installed. Issues like this tend to happen with major AAA launches, but fortunately, the Hogwarts Legacy community has some workarounds that should get the game working. We'll share some troubleshooting ideas that players can use to hopefully fix Hogwarts Legacy on Steam.

How to Fix Hogwarts Legacy Early Access Issue

First and foremost, Steam players that have purchased their way into the early access period of Hogwarts Legacy but can't seem to start the game should try to fully close the Steam application and then reopen it. There's a chance that the green play button will now be available. This method worked for us, but of course, things might be different for other users. Check out some other methods below that we've found from folks in the community:

  • Double-click the desktop icon instead of opening the game from Steam
  • Turn off Steam with Task Manager
  • Try running the game as an admin
  • Increase paging file size in Windows

Hogwarts Legacy is a brand-new release, so issues like this are bound to arise. For anyone that can't seem to run the game, even after using our troubleshooting tips, it might be worth reporting it on the official bug reporting page of the Hogwarts Legacy website so that the development team can be aware of everything going on. Patches and updates are sure to come, too, so just hang on tight, and the game should hopefully get fixed over the coming days and weeks.

Hogwarts Legacy is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is also in development for PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
