Call of Duty: Warzone's upcoming Doom crossover bundle will be host to an unexpected throwback to the look and feel of the original Doom games. The bundle, available on October 9, features Doom's iconic double-barreled Super Shotgun and chainsaw in the visual styling of the iconic and massively influential original 90s games.
As Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare 2's final season before Modern Warfare 3's imminent November launch, Season 6 is going all out with the largest amount of crossovers the franchise may have ever seen in a single season. With Halloween drawing nearer, Call of Duty has pulled in a number of spooky collaborations. The battle pass itself is based on the popular comic book antihero Spawn, featuring a vast array of Spawn-themed skins and cosmetics for players to earn. Purchasable operator packs include the likes of Ash Williams from Evil Dead, Alucard from Hellsing, Lilith and Inarius from Diablo, and Skeletor from Masters of the Universe, and will each become available throughout the month of October.
While Call of Duty: Warzone's Doom tracer pack won't feature a playable operator, its two weapons make up for it with a special wrinkle for fans of the classic Doom games. On TikTok, wesoncod posted a video of the Super Shotgun and chainsaw from the Doom bundle in action. While in use, the framerate for the walking, firing, and reloading animations are significantly lowered to emulate the look and feel of the classic Doom games. It's surprising to see, as something of this nature is usually done as a sort of fun player-created mod instead of an officially licensed cosmetic.
Even though this intentional frame drop only affects the player's weapon animations and has no bearing on the overall framerate of the gameplay, it's still a jarring effect. It would be interesting to see what these weapons look and feel like when being swapped with other normal Call of Duty weapons. This Doom tracer pack looks to serve well as an awesome homage for lovers of the Doom franchise, especially of the early games, but the Super Shotgun's viability in a competitive environment will almost certainly come into question.
Call of Duty is going all out with spooky crossovers for its final season of Modern Warfare 2. As such, this huge wave of collaborations will likely be the last for a while, as crossovers for Modern Warfare 3 may not begin again until next Spring, which has typically been the timeframe for new Call of Duty games in recent years. Doom fans are sure to be looking forward to October 9 when the bundle becomes available in Call of Duty.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
