While Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is set to release alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 later this year, fans do not know much else about the battle royale title. One Call of Duty: Warzone 2 feature that is constantly being discussed is the map, and the latest rumor suggests that said map could be exciting for Blackout fans.

Thus far, there have been a wide range of leaks regarding the Call of Duty: Warzone 2 map. One leak has suggested that it has a desert setting, while another has argued that it will be built primarily around favelas - a believable leak since the campaign will apparently focus on battling drug cartels. Yet another leak suggested that the map will be comprised of classic locations from the original Modern Warfare 2, which would line up perfectly with this new rumor that the map resembles Blackout.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s beloved Blackout mode was the franchise’s first attempt at a battle royale offering, and it proved to be a big hit. While it handled armor and healing differently, a lot of Blackout’s DNA is present in the free-to-play title, with one example being the reskinned version of Alcatraz that is Rebirth Island. Now, according to Tom Henderson, an even larger similarity will be seen in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.

Henderson has proven correct on several occasions, so while all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, his comments are worth taking into consideration. According to the insider, the map’s layout “looks more like Blackout” than Caldera or Verdansk. This could suggest a few things, the first of which being that both the desert and favela leaks might be true. In Blackout, players saw desert areas and locations filled with foliage in the same play space, and Call of Duty: Warzone 2 may be taking a similar approach.

Alongside a map that values environmental variety over realism, the leak about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 locations in Warzone 2 could prove to be accurate. Unlike Verdansk and Caldera, which mainly featured brand-new areas, a large portion of the Blackout map was home to classic multiplayer and Zombies locations. Players could visit Nuketown and Firing Range, battle on the Hijacked boat, or explore Buried and Verruckt. Something similar may take place in Call of Duty: Warzone 2, with players battling through Terminal and Highrise.

Fans of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games have good reason to be optimistic about this leak, as Blackout was built as a celebration of the Black Ops series. If Call of Duty: Warzone 2 really is similar, its map may end up being a celebration of Modern Warfare’s history.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
