When playing through the campaign of Modern Warfare 3 players will have to put a little extra work into expanding their gear options when deploying into missions. Depending on the mission, players will start the mission with a variety of gear, although often limited and sometimes not best suited for the task at hand.
Players can change the weaponry available to them, and unlocked items can be accessed at the start of the mission or when necessary in the mission by accessing one of the many loadout crates scattered in the playable area. Once unlocked, the weapons, field upgrades, and tactical equipment found can be used on any difficulty, allowing players to gear up on an easier difficulty and go into Hardened or Veteran playthroughs fully kitted.

How to Unlock More Weapons in Modern Warfare 3 Campaign
When playing through a campaign mission players will often find orange supply crates scattered throughout the mission area. When players open these crates they will find a new tool inside that can be acquired for use on the remainder of the mission. Items found in supply crates can range from any sort of epic or legendary weapon, including miniguns, explosive crossbows, and dragons breath shotguns to field upgrades like anti-armor rounds and armor boxes. Occasionally players can also find advanced tactical gear like heartbeat sensors.
Opening the supply crates will not only give players the option to pick up these weapons or equipment at that point in the mission, but once a supply crate is opened and the item inside is revealed, it becomes available in the loadout menu permanently. When players open a crate they will hear an audio indicator and see an on-screen banner indicating which item has been added to the mission arsenal.
Players can then equip found items at the start of a mission, if restarting for any reason (like possibly needing a suppressed weapon for a mission and not having one, sprinting through loudly until a silenced weapon is found in a supply crate, and restarting with the silenced weapon equipped), or when accessing one of the loadout crates in the mission area. Non-consumable equipment that is found on mission like ascenders and plate vest upgrades will become permanently equipped and do not have to be set to a loadout.
Additionally, when players unlock new weapons and field upgrades for their campaign custom loadouts the items become available on any difficulty, not just the difficulty on which the item was acquired. Players can go through the campaign on a lower difficulty and beat the harder parts of missions to get the opportunity to search for supply crates and find the best weapons available on the mission to ensure success on the Hardened or Veteran difficulties.
