The Call of Duty franchise is no stranger to drone warfare but some clever players in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare have found a way to bring aerial combat to the next level. In Modern Warfare, the recon drone serves as a reconnaissance tool that marks enemy movements and reports it to teammates.
As a reconnaissance device, the recon drone comes with no built-in weapons or ways to deal damage. That has not stopped players from finding ways to weaponize the device and make it an unexpected combat tactic.
In the video, one of the players deploys the recon drone and flies it low towards the ground. It is easy to see another player throw something on the back of the drone setting up the infamous drone trick, and then it takes off to find an unwilling victim. As it rounds the corner it approaches the victim only to be shot down and cut quickly back to a round over screen.
In the kill cam, players can see the drone flying off with a bundle of C4 attached to it. Payload intact, it flew towards its target just to be shot down, but the C4 survived causing an explosive effect for the unexpecting player.
With Season 4 on the horizon, it is good to know that classic tactics like this will still be viable to some degree. The drone trick has been around for multiple games in the franchise occasionally making it back to headlines as a hilarious example of player ingenuity.
Players have found other ways to combine their equipment with sections of the environment or vehicles in the game. The drone trick is almost as popular as the trophy system glitch but each instance shows the unique problem solving of players within the Call of Duty community. It will be interesting to see what the community does with new weapons in Season 4.
Performing the drone trick is fairly simple. Just have one player pilot a drone, toss a pack of C4 onto its back, and fly to the target. Well-coordinated teams will be able to detonate before the drone gets shot, but no matter the result the drone is sure to blast enemy players away.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
